Tips and Tricks On Working With Recruiters

Posted 02/01/2010 by Angela B

You’d think in this economy that hiring a candidate would be a snap. But it still takes the right skill set and your best interviewing for us to close a deal. We seek that candidate who matches the job requirements and fits the team. Here are some tips and tricks for working with us in Recruitment Services.

1. Apply to jobs that match your qualifications. Seems simple but often people throw their hat into the ring for any job and then are disappointed when we don’t call. We want to call you—for the job that suits you best. If the positions says five years of Medicare Sales required, we will only consider candidates who meet that minimum.
2. Don’t judge a job by its title. Instead of searching for a position by title, search by skills and responsibilities
3. Be prepared. Keep track of the positions you apply to so you can speak intelligently with a recruiter when he or she calls or emails.
4. Update your on-line profile with us. If you have applied years ago, your old phone and email is still in the system.
5. If you can’t remember your password, ask for it to be reset. This is better than creating a new profile and having multiple entries in the system.
6. If you are asked to interview with us, please be flexible with your schedule.
7. If you are interviewing over the phone, select a quiet, private place. Nothing is worse than a candidate who interviews in a noisy lobby and keeps saying, “Excuse me. I can’t hear you.”
8. Be professional at all times. We know it can be frustrating waiting to go through the process. We are working as quickly as we can.
9. If the application process requires you to submit other information, i.e., writing samples, comply as soon as possible. Put your best foot forward by submitting the best example of your work.
10. It seems clique, but please be sure your resume and any other documents are free of typos and grammatical errors.
11. While we’re on the topic of resumes, be sure that yours is clear and properly sells your skills and experience. No gimmicks. Also, you’re better off with a Summary at the top, rather than an Objective. You will turn off a hiring manager if you have an objective different than the position for which you are interviewing.
12. Hiring managers want energy! Show that you are interested in both THIS job and UnitedHealth Group. They don’t want aggression, however, so be sure to be naturally interested and not overly assertive.
13. Follow up with us. We know you often don’t know which recruiter is working on the position. We will contact you if you are a qualified candidate. If you have already spoken with us, you are welcome to contact us for a follow-up. Contrary to some job seeking advice, we do not recommend contacting us daily. Once or twice a week is fine. Again, we are working through the process as quickly as we can.
14. Believe in yourself and in your abilities, apply to positions that are a match for your skills and experience, maintain a positive outlook, and present your best in every interview, and you will find the role that suits you.
15. We love working here, and we think you will too. UnitedHealth Group is a company of smart, dedicated, hard working individuals who care about healthcare and each other.
