Trends

Posted 07/28/2010 by Lisa S

Now is an exciting time to be in the health care field. Underwriting is a vibrant field that is an art as well as a science. Hiring managers get excited about candidates with demonstrated experience working with sales, finance, operations, and actuarial to assess risks and pricing trends.  While we have sophisticated tools in place your experience with blending the art and the science - or striking the right balance - will set you and the organization apart.  Assessments that are too loose won't translate to profitability; too conservative and you could kill the deal. We have a very large shop with multi locations throughout the US and value large group, small group, key, and national account experience.

Hot skills/profile

Underwriters need excellent math and financial skills so that they can determine premium costs, based on actuarial data, sales data and formulas that are used to evaluate premium pricing models. Individual market, large group and self funded health care (ASO) insurance experience is the most valuable experience, coupled with the ability to collaborate with sales and finance teams.

What is the best approach to learning more about jobs in this space?

Posted 02/01/2010 by Jeff A

There are several great ways to get information about the types of jobs and what it is like to work here. You can start with looking at the other pages in our career area on the careers website. Here you can “meet” employees in this space or look for times to chat with our recruiters live. We also feature many of our most common positions with an overview of type of work people do in these roles. It is also helpful to view the openings on our careers website. You can search by type of job, level, and location. Using this information you can discover whether this is indeed the right industry and organization where you will see your career flourish.

I also recommend that you also take a moment to access our corporate web page and check out the press releases specific to products and services most closely aligned with your area of expertise. You will also find information about our approach to health care reform and helping people live healthier lives. This will give you some great talking points and questions to bring forward to a recruiter or hiring manager at our company.

Trends in the Underwriting and Pricing Area

Posted 02/01/2010 by Phyllis C

The backgrounds that Hiring Managers get most excited about are of candidates who have a diverse background and demonstrated experience working with sales, finance, operations & actuarial teams to assess risk an identify pricing trends. If you are too loose in your assessments, there won’t be any profitability; too conservative and you could kill the deal! Another trend is a lean toward those with larger group underwriting experience, as well as experience with key or national -level accounts.
