Own Your Opportunity

Own Your Opportunity

by Rebecca G. on May 15, 2012

You've just landed a great opportunity at UnitedHealth Group (or hope to soon)? Congrats! Whether you'll be taking advantage of an internship or launching your career here, it can be a little overwhelming. Not to worry... there will be a great team surrounding you. There's a lot to learn, and over the next few months, you'll have a lot of questions and encounter new challenges every day. You might just be wondering, "How do I get the most out of this experience?"

In addition to demonstrating our core values and "giving it your all" every day to help people live healthier lives, a few leaders have taken the time to share a little advice with you:

"Leverage Networking - you will meet a lot of great employees and other interns. Be proactive and network as much as possible. It's truly a small world, and you never know when you'll need to tap into someone who you meet along your path at UnitedHealth Group."

- Ouraphone Siri-Outhay, Director of Diversity Recruiting

"Never stop exploring.  Challenge yourself to learn something new every day.  Don't be afraid to ask questions and disrupt the norm, that's why you are here.  Understand the landscape of the organization and leverage the greatest asset UnitedHealth Group has to offer, its people.   We are all here to help you succeed."

- Richard T., Director, IT

"It is important for you to work with many different people and to offer to lend a hand in any area. By doing this, you'll get a feel for different individual and team work styles. You’ll also see the real-life tasks that accumulate to a job and ultimately into a career. Seeing daily aspects, as well as the long term potential career path, will be important in determining where you choose to take your career at UnitedHealth Group."

- Karin O., Controller

"Be open-minded about the work you are asked to do. During any internship, you will undoubtedly be asked to do some challenging and some not-so-challenging work. Attack it all with a can-do, upbeat attitude and a demonstrated desire to produce a superior work product. If you do excellent work with an exceptional attitude, even on the smaller tasks, you will quickly make a name for yourself. Managers will seek you out, and more challenging work will come your way."

-Paul Stephan, Director of College Recruiting
