Lead AI/ML Engineer

Optum AI is UnitedHealth Group’s enterprise AI team. We are AI/ML scientists and engineers with deep expertise in AI/ML engineering for health care. We develop AI/ML solutions for the highest impact opportunities across UnitedHealth Group businesses including UnitedHealthcare, Optum Financial, Optum Health, Optum Insight, and Optum Rx. In addition to transforming the health care journey through responsible AI/ML innovation, our charter also includes developing and supporting an enterprise AI/ML development platform.

Generative AI methods for working with structured and unstructured health care data are continuously being developed and improved. • Partner with world-class experts on innovative solutions: Our team members are developing novel AI/ML solutions to business challenges. In some cases, this includes the opportunity to file patents and publish papers about the methods we develop. We also collaborate with AI/ML researchers at some of the world’s top universities.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop advanced quantitative modules using a variety of programs/software to support predictive assessment
- Communicating analytics model behavior/results to business
- Carrying out technical risk analysis and reliability assessments
- Performing complex analyses, including optimization, text analytics, machine learning, social-science modeling, and statistical analysis, parametric and non-parametric statistical models and techniques
- Provide recommendations for plans, programs, strategies, policies, and budgets
- Design of algorithms that require different models/methods to be used together
- Driving data quality throughout the organization
- Apply solid understanding of data science techniques and libraries to business problems
- Direct data science teams to complete all project deliverables
- Take a leadership role in the data science community of experts
- Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Operations Research, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or Engineering, or in a related field, but a Master’s degree is preferred
- 10+ years of experience in Data Science or related fields
- 8+ years of work experience with at least one of the following languages: Python, Java, and R
- Comprehensive knowledge of modern data science and product/web analytics tools and techniques, including Python and associated data science ecosystem, Machine Learning, Google Cloud Data platform: BigQuery, Dataflow, etc.
- Broad knowledge and understanding of advanced statistical, machine learning, and/or data mining techniques
- Knowledge of both traditional machine learning algorithms and modern deep learning and generative AI models and methods
- Demonstrated ability to develop and manage complex projects, leading an interdisciplinary team to achieve project goals
- Demonstrated ability to provide mentorship and guidance for the efficient and technical development of the members of your team
- Demonstrated advanced quantitative and statistical analysis skills to solve business problems and provide practical business insight using data and a quantitative/scientific approach
- Proven exceptional verbal and written communication skills to relate with and supervise teams, as well as to communicate technical content and analytical insights/complex findings in a clear and concise manner to multiple audiences, including senior management
