We’re seeking a Senior-level design system designer with deep expertise in design tokens, theming architecture and cross-platform implementation (Figma, Token Studio, React, and React native) This person will own the token layer of the Abyss Design System – from architecture to rollout – enabling brand theming, accessibility, and scale across multiple UHC product ecosystems.
They’ll partner tightly with engineering and accessibility to define how design intent translates into code through tokenized systems, variable structures, and semantic naming that scales across brands and products.
You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Token System Lead
- Architect and maintain the full token framework (core → semantic → component → theme layers) across Figma, Token Studio, and code (Style dictionary, Tokens Studio plugin, or internal pipelines)
- Multi-brand and multi-theme architecture
- Ensuring seamless switching (UHC → Surest → Optum) across both design and dev environments
- Partner with engineering
- To establish one-to-one parity between design tokens and code tokens, leveraging modern tools like Code Connect, Style Dictionary or custom pipelines
- Cross-functional collaboration
- Collaborate with accessibility to bake contrast, motion, and legibility tokens into the system from the start
- Partner with leadership to integrate tokens into governance workflows – ensuring contribution, review and publishing processes are scalable and traceable
- Lead efforts around token naming conventions, variable collections, and theme inheritance strategies in Figma
- Define and document the token strategy and usage guidelines in our documentation site
- Mentor and up skill designers and engineers on token literacy – how tokens enable consistency, efficiency and cross platform alignment
- Identify and deliver measurable outcomes – e.g. hours saves, reduced theme defects or accessibility improvements

Required Qualifications:
- 4+ years of experience in UX/UI design, with at least 2+ years focused on design systems at scale
- Hands-on experience collaborating with developers to implement token pipelines
- Solid understanding of Figma Variables Architecture (modes, collections, aliasing and token mapping)
- Understanding of WCAG accessibility standards and how to express them via tokens (contrast, color roles, motion, etc.)
- Proven expertise in design tokens: structure, naming conventions, Figma variables, Token Studio, and code delivery workflows
- Proven ability to design and manage multi-brand, multi-theme systems with clear inheritance
- Proven exceptional documentation skills and experience contributing to design sites
- Proven excellent system thinking, cross-functional communications, and the ability to lead with clarity in ambiguity
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with AI-assisted design and code generation tools (e.g. Code Connect, Figma MCP, Cursor etc.)
- Understanding of semantic versioning and release pipelines for tokens and components
- Familiarity with React Native, SwiftUI or Android compose and how tokens translate cross-platform
- Proven expertise designing for enterprise-scale systems

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you’ll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $89,900 to $160,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
