The Director, M&A Diligence and Integration (D&I) role is part of a key team of professionals that leads Optum’s acquisition diligence and integration efforts across the Optum West Region. 

This role manages Optum’s due diligence efforts during the acquisition process, as well as integration planning which requires intense project management of multiple transactions simultaneously. The ideal candidate will be a solid critical thinker, initiative-taking, organized, process-oriented, and self-directed. This individual will be responsible for coordinating the interaction and involvement of our business stakeholders, diligence leads (e.g., operations, finance, accounting, IT, HR), and our market leadership teams. This individual has a successful record of managing the implementation of major strategic initiatives and understanding of the needs of healthcare business. This position handles and manages confidential material relating to corporate decisions, structure, and significance. 

Must reside in the following States –AZ, CA, CO, ID, NM, NV, UT, WA & OR

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the day-to-day project management of multiple acquisitions simultaneously, which could involve different states within the region
  • Oversees and coordinates due diligence efforts with internal partners and stakeholders
  • Maintains and builds relationships across the seller(s), internal partners, and market leadership
  • Serve as a primary contact to the seller and disseminate information to the cross-functional diligence and integration teams
  • Manage the entire diligence and pre-close integration process, engaging internal and external stakeholders and local and national teams on a regular basis to resolve outstanding items necessary for a smooth transition keeping with acquisition timeline
  • Facilitate clear and action-oriented communication with sellers and key stakeholders, including executive leadership, on behalf of the business needs and transaction team throughout the acquisition process
  • Partners with the local operations leadership to develop post-close integration plans
  • Set project related deadlines, assigns responsibilities, monitors, and tracks status of all key diligence and integration activities, and provide reporting to transaction leads and market executives
  • Ability to anticipate areas of difficulty/potential risks, contribute towards creative solutions and moves to action quickly
  • Function as liaison, problem-solver, and facilitator for all aspects of projects
  • Supervision and oversight of project coordinators and other diligence and integration support staff, as necessary
  • Continuously review acquisition and integration processes, recommending areas for improvement and efficiency gains
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of project management, medical group operations, consulting, or related experience
  • 5+ years in the healthcare field, with an emphasis in clinic operations or staff training and development, including three or more years of management level experience
  • Experience with mergers & acquisitions, diligence, and business integration
  • Experience working in a large, complex corporate environment with multiple internal stakeholders
  • Experience coordinating across a matrix organization
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously while effectively driving progress towards established goals
  • Knowledge of organization policies, procedures, and ability to read, interpret, and apply
  • Proven ability to exercise logic and sound judgment in the development of strategies and contractual relationships
  • Proven solid analytical/statistical skills used in evaluating healthcare data as used in the development, implementation, and monitoring of contractual relationships
  • Proven solid people skills with ability to interface effectively both externally and internally with a wide range of people including physicians, office staff and other health plan staff
  • Ability to travel across the West Region (includes AZ, CA, CO, ID, NM, NV, UT, WA & OR) for deal initiation, diligence, and on-site integration (up to 75% at maximum, depending on project volume)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in Project Management: CAPM and/or PMP
  • Experience with project management software (Midaxo and/or Smartsheet)
  • Advanced knowledge and skill in EMR/EHRs, Practice Management Systems, and other clinic related systems
  • Familiar with healthcare concepts and practices as it relates to IPAs (Independent Physician Associations), providers, value-based care, and healthcare metrics (HEDIS, stars, risk adjustment)

California, Colorado, Nevada or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $104,700 to $190,400 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
