The Coordination of Benefits team at Optum is building data pipelines for ingesting and processing PHI data that both internal and external customers consume. We ingest terabytes of data each week and produce data that is governed by several client-specific rules. The solution makes use of Spark, EMR, Airflow, external APIs, and even an AI model to provide value to our customers. The team releases software on a weekly basis that is well-tested and reviewed by other team members. Our team is collaborative and remote, but we have room for improvement in documentation and inter-team communication. The pace of work is steady and quick, but not overwhelming so that team members can consistently finish their workday at expected times. 
 

The team is seeking a senior data engineer to design, build, and support our data pipelines. We are looking for a person that is willing dig into the software and satisfy needs in any area of the application. We have a mature team that has built quality software but is now working to adapt the tools around it to a changing landscape within the organization. We are seeking someone that has shown the ability to design and develop data pipelines in a cloud environment, but also pays attention to the full picture, such as creating useful documentation, building efficient CICD tools, and mentoring other engineers. An ideal candidate would have experience in building either batch or stream data processing applications in the cloud, handling large amounts of sensitive data while working within a large organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise in design, engineering, and implementation of Data Ingestion, ETL and Database in the Public Cloud (AWS/Azure), Big Data and API Space. Expected to have hands-on coding during most of the day, for both novel solutions and reusable patterns
  • Understands security threats and patterns comprehensively and ensures adherence to all regulatory initiatives. HIPPA, PHI, PII, locational data restrictions, contractual etc.
  • Contribute to common framework and repository for the development of Modern APIs available to the Optum Product Engineering Team
  • Demonstrate leadership in the context of software engineering and be an evangelist for engineering best practices
  • Create next generation data processing applications to use our Data as a strategic platform to grow the top line revenue
  • Work collaboratively with established engineers to meet business needs and encourage the growth of junior engineers through skills development and technical guidance
  • Display a solid desire to achieve and attain high levels of both internal and external customer satisfaction

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or 4+ years of equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience with data warehousing services on AWS or Azure
  • 3+ years of software product development experience working on commercially available software and / or healthcare platforms.
  • 3+ years of experience in using modern software engineering and product development tools including Agile / SAFE, Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, DevOps etc.
  • 2+ years of experience as an emerging subject matter expert on Cloud technologies preferably AWS and cloud data solutions such as EMR and Spark
  • Legally authorized to work in the US without any restrictions. Proof will be required

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience building Big Data solutions on public cloud (AWS/Azure)
  • Experience building data pipelines on public cloud with skills like Apache Spark, EMR, and Airflow
  • Experience with Python programming language
  • Solid experience of operating in a quickly changing environment and driving technological innovation to meet business requirement
  • Proven track record of building relationships across cross-functional teams

The salary range for this role is $89,800 to $176,700 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
