The Director of Communications leverages communications expertise, business acumen and interpersonal skills to design and deliver communication plans, strategies and messaging.

 

This position provides strategic counsel for Optum Operating Committee functional leaders (People Team, Finance, Growth) in driving their business and employee experience goals, ensuring alignment with the broader UnitedHealth Group narrative and strategic growth pillars.

 

In addition, this position will support key projects to advance Optum business priorities through proactive communications campaigns that include supporting our employee engagement and enterprise priorities. This position is part of the Optum corporate communications team.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Provides counsel to ensure functional leaders are communicating consistently with enterprise messages
• Develop communications plans aligned with established business needs and communications strategies with resources available and aligned with our scope. (Town Halls and executive messaging, significant change initiatives only)
• Ensures all communications align with UnitedHealth Group growth pillars, enabling capabilities and Optum business priorities
• Uses data, analytics and outside-voice-in to shape communications, including channel and messaging
• Ensures consistency across all content and channels
• Partners with the channel strategy team to execute deliverables for functional leaders (e.g., town halls, strategic messages, org announcements) 
• Partner with UHG and UHC teams to align functional communications when needed across all three enterprises

Required Qualifications:

• 7+ years of communications experience within a matrixed organization
• 7+ years of experience with the full suite of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• 5+ years of project management experience
• 5+ years of professional writing and editing experience
• Integrated communications experience
• External communications experience
• Demonstrated experience working and consulting with senior executives
• Experience handling mergers and acquisitions

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Combination of corporate and agency communications experience
• Social media experience (i.e. developing blogs, social media campaigns, podcasts, etc.)

 

The salary range for this role is $124,500 to $239,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
