We’re looking for a Lead Mobile Software Engineer to help architect and build the next-generation flagship mobile app at Optum. This app will unify multiple business unit experiences—such as patient records, banking, and guided care—into a single, scalable container platform. While individual teams will continue to own their features, they will now deploy into this shared app experience, making it the central hub for 80% of our mobile offerings.

This is a deeply hands-on role for someone who thrives on solving complex problems, shaping technical strategy, and leading by example. You’ll work closely with platform and feature teams to design scalable mobile architecture, guide full lifecycle projects, and support teams across the organization. You’ll serve as the senior technical lead supporting multiple scrum teams, acting as a trusted expert and key point of technical guidance across the organization.

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Platform Architecture: Lead the design and evolution of a container-based mobile platform that supports multiple business units within a unified app experience
  • Technical Leadership: Provide expert guidance and mentorship to developers on coding, testing, and deployment best practices. Act as a technical lead across multiple scrum teams
  • Project Oversight: Oversee planning, execution, and delivery of mobile projects to meet quality and timeline goals. Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to align technical work with business objectives
  • Code Quality: Maintain high code quality through testing, code reviews, and debugging. Manage technical debt and promote long-term codebase health
  • Innovation & Improvement: Drive continuous improvement and innovation within the mobile platform. Implement strategies to enhance app performance and functionality
  • Problem-Solving: Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues quickly and effectively. Ensure platform stability and reliability through proactive analysis and solutions
  • Collaboration: Foster a collaborative, knowledge-sharing team environment. Facilitate clear communication across engineering and cross-functional teams
  • Customer Focus: Partner with support teams to address user issues and feedback. Prioritize features and fixes based on customer needs and market trends

You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of hands-on experience with JavaScript in production environments
  • 4+ years of experience with React Native, building and maintaining mobile applications
  • 2+ years of experience with GitHub Actions for automation and deployment workflows
  • Experience implementing and maintaining automated testing and CI/CD pipelines in production environments
  • Experience using performance monitoring tools such as Firebase Performance, New Relic, or Sentry
  • Experience collaborating with UX/UI teams, contributing to the design and delivery of user-centered features
  • Solid understanding of Agile/Scrum methodologies, with practical experience working in Agile teams
  • Demonstrated ability to lead software projects from initial design through deployment
  • Proven excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Proven problem-solving skills, particularly in diagnosing and resolving critical production issues or performance bottlenecks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Bitrise for CI/CD workflows
  • Hands-on programming experience in Swift or Kotlin, applied in real-world or production settings
  • Published technical content or contributed to open-source projects
