Our Product Engineering team – Optum Product Engineering Nexus (OPEN) are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer who shall help us build and scale data quality and data observability solutions for our Engineering teams. The Teams have a mix of commercial products at ideate, manage and build stages.
We are seeking an ML Engineer to join a newly formed Product Engineering team working on a greenfield Business Intelligence (BI) product built on large-scale historical datasets. This role sits at the intersection of Data Engineering, Software Engineering, and ML Operations, with a solid emphasis on data quality, observability, and operational excellence.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain ML workflows with observability features to detect anomalies, and data quality issues in production pipelines
- Implement monitoring and observability for data quality and pipeline reliability
- Leverage automated validation frameworks (e.g. Great Expectations) to catch low quality data before it impacts products or downstream systems
- Work within Databricks environments to support quality evaluation of data transformations and operational workflows
- Integrate validation and observability in the operations and transformation pipelines built using DBT
- Support incident response, triage and root cause analysis for production issues
- Contribute to the development of data pipeline orchestration using tools such as Airflow
- Partner closely with Data Engineers, Software Engineers, and Automation Engineers within a multi disciplinary value stream team
- Assist with monitoring production batch data flows, improving operational visibility, and responding to data related incidents
- Participate in sprint ceremonies, design discussions, and technical reviews with the wider team

Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience in building validation and observability controls on Data pipelines
- Demonstrated operational experience of deploying, monitoring and maintaining systems in production including CI/CD pipelines with tooling such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins
- Demonstrated knowledge of observability practices
- Proven experience with python
- Proven experience of partnering on the delivery of Software with ability to communicate and collaborate with team members
- Proven experience with one or more public cloud computing platforms such as Azure, AWS & GCP preference for Azure
- Proven experience of working in a ‘Big Data’ eco-system with some experience in the following; One or more Data platforms (Databricks, Snowflake, Big Query), Orchestration tooling (Airflow, Azure Data Factory) and Innovative and passionate about new technologies
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in Computer Science or related technical field
- Demonstrated knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development agile life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build process, testing and operations
- Proven experience with building validation controls on large datasets
