The Vice President, internal communications for UnitedHealthcare is responsible for leading the design and implementation of an internal communications strategy that engages, educates and inspires employees across the organization. This leader manages a team that supports the CEO and members of the Executive Council and coordinates internal communications campaigns that impact the various business lines, regional and local market teams, and shared service areas. This individual will be responsible for the ongoing evolution of internal communications practices that enable the successful achievement of business goals and continue to build UHC’s reputation as an employer that attracts and develops top talent. This person will also serve as an internal communications counselor, helping shape a culture and environment that aligns with our mission to help people live healthier lives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all UHC internal communications in partnership with line of business and shared services communications teams
  • Develop and manage relationships and effectively interact with a range of stakeholders, including senior executives, to understand how internal communications can support business priorities
  • Support the UHC CEO and senior team by creating opportunities for members of the executive council to engage with employees through a variety of communication channels (e.g., blogs, meetings, videos, and written communications)
  • Develop communication plans aligned with established business and reputation needs.
  • Coordinate and integrate messaging and engagement activities across internal audiences, ensuring consistency of messaging and achieving strategic goals aligned to business priorities
  • Streamline and optimize internal communications to reduce redundancies and create consistent approach to design and distribution
  • Oversee teams that provide the best strategy and tactical expertise in the areas of content publishing, meetings and events, digital communications and creative design
  • Partner closely with UHC’s People Team on projects related to organizational structure, change management and employee engagement in the ongoing development and articulation of key company story lines that will resonate and strengthen UHC’s connection with employees
  • Lead and mentor team, ensuring that team members are consistently equipped with the direction, information, resources and experienced partnership they need to succeed
  • Foster strong relationships with peers across UnitedHealthcare, Optum and UnitedHealth Group to ensure a coordinated approach to enterprise-wide initiatives, programs and issues
  • Managing issues and crisis communications with internal audiences, including providing counsel to senior executives and impacted internal clients
  • Develop and enforce systems and processes that ensure consistent tracking and reporting of communications initiative results, including maintenance and distribution of key executive visibility/reporting tools. Ensure the quality and effectiveness of internal communications across UnitedHealthcare, creating effective feedback and measurement systems

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism or Public Relations
  • 10+ years of internal communications experience within a matrix organization
  • 10+ years of project management experience
  • 10+ years of professional writing and editing experience
  • 10+ years of experience with intranets
  • 10+ years of experience with the full suite of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • 10+ years of experience translating technical and scientific information into layman’s terms
  • 5+ years of social media experience (i.e., blogs, pod casting, etc.)

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
