The Optum AI Transformation and Strategy team is UnitedHealth Group’s enterprise AI transformation team, leading the development of our enterprise AI strategy and modernization agenda. As a Senior Director of Planning and Strategy, you will support and work hand-in-hand with our Chief AI Transformation and Strategy Officer, together driving the enterprise AI transformation. Your small but highly empowered team will own our AI portfolio focused on high-impact AI initiatives that deliver significant value to our business and those we serve. You will partner with business and technology stakeholders to develop AI/ML strategies for the highest impact opportunities across UnitedHealth Group businesses, including UnitedHealthcare, Optum Financial, Optum Health, Optum Insight, and Optum Rx.
As a Lead AI/ML Software Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, and scaling of AI systems for health applications at Optum. You will be responsible for the development and execution of the vision for enabling solutions on United AI Studio (enterprise ML platform). As a Lead Engineer, you will ensure technical tasks and properly detailed, designed and executed per existing standards. You are expected to play key role in design activities and scoping and mentor juniors in execution.
You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. Preference for CST or EST time zones.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of AI/ML solutions that address complex business challenges and opportunities, contributing towards the United AI Studio Enterprise Platform
- Decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions
- Mentor and guide a team of AI/ML software and platform engineers, fostering an environment of continuous learning and improvement
- Develop robust, scalable, and maintainable code that meets the high standards of quality and performance
- Contribute to the strategic direction of the AI/ML platform team, including setting goals and developing roadmaps
- Communicate complex AI/ML concepts to non-technical stakeholders and provide clear project updates
- Stay up to date with the latest advancements in AI/ML technology and introduce innovative techniques and tools to the team
- Should be flexible, adapting to meet the needs of the team, project, or product
- Solicit differing views and are willing to change your mind as you learn more

Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in computer science or related field; or bachelor’s degree and at least 7 years of relevant experience
- 7+ years industry experience as a Software Engineer, Software Developer, or AI/ML Engineer, with at least 2+ years in senior or lead role
- 5+ years of experience with design activities (architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling) on cloud platforms (e.g. Databricks, Azure, AWS, GCP, Snowflake)
- 5+ years of experience with demonstrable proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Java
- 3+ years of experience and demonstratable ability to lead and mentor a technical team with a collaborative and results-driven approach
- 3+ years of experience with MLOps practices and tools for continuous integration and deployment of ML models
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with DevOps practices, including CI/CD, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure as code
- Experience influencing in a heavily matrixed organization
- Higher-level understanding of AI/ML use-cases and production implementation
- Proficiency in AI/ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras; or distributed computing frameworks such as Apache Spark

The salary range for this role is $106,800 to $194,200 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
