The importance of integrity in work and at home.

I would define integrity as doing what is right- even when that is difficult. Looking at an issue from all perspectives to help you determine what is needed, doing all you can to accomplish that goal, and following through on your commitments.

Nursing is routinely ranked one of the most ethical careers by the general population.  With regard to that ranking, it is imperative that we as nurses live up to that image.  We must conduct ourselves with a high moral standard.  We have to communicate factual information to our members/patients, and take the time to ensure accurate understanding.  We are the advocate for our members/patients and we have to act accordingly- keeping their best interest as our top priority.

For me, the best way to inspire integrity in my team is to inspire teamwork and quality.  I work closely with my team to encourage them to support each other, and view their peers as part of their “work family.”  As a result they treat each as they would their family.  When an issue arises, they are the first to volunteer. I routinely tell all my staff “you won’t always have time to help someone else… but you have to realize that someone is worse off than you at the moment, and one day it will be you in that situation… and you would want someone to make time to help you.”  I don’t think that as a nurse we have to be encouraged to provide excellent care for our member- it is simply what we do, and my staff know that excellent care is my expectation- and it is theirs as well.

I believe it is equally important to maintain integrity in my personal life and that means “what you see is what you get.”  I have a small group of wonderful individuals that I consider “family”, and a wide group of friends.  They all know that if they are ever in need that I would be here for them.  I follow through on my commitments and my friends/family know that they can rely on me when needed.  I understand that at times everyone needs help- and just like I tell my team… even if I don’t have time to assist- I make time.  As a result I also know that my friends/family are there for me in my time of need. It is a wonderful feeling to know that you have a support group that looks out for you, and that you are there for them the same.
