One thing you can't help noticing at a dragon boat race: the strong, steady drumbeats setting the pace for each team. The rhythmic pounding is critical to synchronizing the paddlers' strokes and guiding them to peak performance. So we're not surprised to hear Anthony make frequent comparisons between his passion for dragon boat racing and his job with UnitedHealth Group. Teamwork is vital to both, he says, and the best part of his job is working with people. Whether he's on the dragon boat or at work, he appreciates being part of a large group where he can also benefit from the experiences of different individuals. For Anthony, happiness isn't about marching to the beat of a different drummer. It's about finding the beat that unites us all.

"I love the teamwork on a dragon boat. As a leader, you should know the strengths and weaknesses of your team members – and as team players you need to follow the leader in unison and go with the flow. Working as one, everyone puts his or her mind to winning the race. Which is exactly how it feels working at UnitedHealth Group, too."

How do you describe what you do to family and friends?

I tell my family that I'm a nurse and I help people. As a utilization manager, I check on the services that members receive and make sure they're being delivered in the best way.

Describe a challenging aspect of your job.

I think the most challenging part of my job is just respecting that everyone has his or her own personality. Being on a team means adjusting to other people and learning how to work with each other, which of course is what we also do on the dragon boat.

Do you see any overlap between your job and your passion?

Teamwork is vital to both. At work as well as on the dragon boat, you have team players and leaders. Before you can be an effective leader on the boat, you have to know what it's like to be a team player, and how that role affects the individual members. As a leader you also need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of everyone. And when it comes down to critical moments of a race – or say, on the job – everyone needs to be positive and focused on good vibes. There are a lot of similarities.

How has UnitedHealth Group helped you grow your career?

UnitedHealth Group has been helping me out since the day I started, they're providing me with a great opportunity and a path for career growth.  I love the work environment, and whenever I need help someone is there to provide it.

What do you love most about your job?

What I love most is people – helping and caring for them. That's why I entered the medical world and wanted to be a nurse. I also love being part of a large team – with so many people around, there's always someone to learn from.

What should someone know before joining our company?

You can find everything you're looking for here: great people, a great job, compensation and recreational activities. It's an experience that can set you up for a great future, because there are so many ways to contribute at your job and within your community.

Cabin or luxury hotel?

A cabin. I'm the kind of person you can put anywhere!

Favorite food and why?

Spaghetti – but I really love any kind of pasta.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

Most people probably think I'm pretty boring. But once they get to know me, they see that I'm really adventurous and sport-minded. I love exploring the extremes.

Most grateful for?

Having this kind of wonderful life.
