This clinical content development research physician position will facilitate and share responsibility for the development and delivery of current, consistent, accurate, evidence-based clinical content for the assigned Optum Clinical Groups and support other Decision Support products as required. The research physician is responsible, in collaboration with the InterQual Medical Directors, for assuring the accuracy, consistency, and evidence basis for the content.  Works independently and directly with the clinical content development staff and other Research Physicians to create, review, comment, advise and sign off on clinical content releases.  Collaborates with the Product Directors, Product Management, and Optum Physician Advisor Services leadership to deliver market leading products.  Supports Sales and Account Management, regulatory affairs, internal and external education, training and related activities as required.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • 70% – Work independently on assignments as well as with content developers to develop and assure clinical content accuracy, currency with the literature-based evidence and relevance to Optum Clinical Group content. Provide guidance to content developers based on critical appraisal of medical literature and practice experience regarding clinical content. Creates and/or updates content. Reviews content drafts. Participates in development meetings. Performs content QA using tools & techniques assuring clinical accuracy. Signs off on content as final and clinically accurate
  • 10% – Collaborate with product management, product development, and Optum Physician Advisors to develop and re-structure clinical content for different users, applications, and contexts
  • 10% – Work with fellow Medical Directors, Physician Advisors, and other clinical managers to assure clinical content and decision support consistency within and across Optum Clinical Decision Support products
  • 5% – Serve as a clinical resource for both internal and external customers. Accompany the Sales or Regulatory teams on calls and provide support and consultation as needed. Applies knowledge gained through professional development and communicates it to internal and/or external parties
  • 5% – Interfaces with clients to provide clinical leadership and support as well as gain an understanding of client needs in collaboration with Optum Physician Advisor Services leadership and account management; help address and resolve clinical questions/issues identified by clients

Required Qualifications:

  • M.D. or D.O.; active unrestricted licensure in good standing to practice medicine in a U.S. state
  • 3+ years of medical practice experience in a hospital-based setting 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board certification
  • Experience in developing research reports and authoring education documents for physicians 
  • Knowledge of provider Utilization Review practices
  • Knowledge of payer Utilization Review practices
  • Evidence based medicine process knowledge and experience with evidence-based literature review
  • Proven ability to research medical topics and review the literature to determine the appropriate level of evidence
  • Proven solid organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Proven ability to problem-solve and develop recommendations

The salary range for this role is $269,500 to $425,500 annually based on full-time employment. Role is also eligible to receive bonuses based on sales performance. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
