The Director of Database Administration will lead a small team of database administrators and data engineers, leveraging a combination of technical expertise and leadership skills to ensure the stability, performance, and scalability of our SQL Platform infrastructure. This leadership position is responsible for the strategic direction, high-level architectural solutions, and the operational excellence of our database systems, including Always-On High Availability, Disaster Recovery, and migration to other systems such as Azure and PostgreSQL.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to a team of database administrators and data engineers. Foster a collaborative and high-performance team environment through effective coaching, mentoring, and performance management
  • Design, optimize, and implement high-level architectural solutions across the SQL Platform infrastructure. Ensure that the database systems are scalable, reliable, and meet the performance requirements of the business
  • Develop and maintain robust disaster recovery plans and ensure high availability of the database systems. Implement and manage Always-On High Availability solutions to support the business continuity plans
  • Analyze and optimize the enterprise database server infrastructure to ensure maximum performance and stability. Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and implement best practices to enhance system performance
  • Lead the migration efforts to other systems such as Azure and PostgreSQL. Collaborate with the Data Engineering team to integrate new solutions seamlessly into the existing ecosystem
  • Communicate effectively at both business and technical levels. Work closely with stakeholders including business units, infrastructure teams, and the Technical Command Center to understand requirements and deliver solutions that meet their needs
  • Collaborate with Principal Data Engineers to architect and implement solutions for future growth. Stay abreast of the latest industry trends and technologies to ensure that our database infrastructure remains cutting-edge
  • Ensure that all database systems comply with industry regulations and security standards. Implement security measures to protect sensitive data and maintain data integrity

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in database administration, with a focus on SQL Server, Azure, and PostgreSQL
  • 5+ years of experience in a leadership role managing a team of database administrators and data engineers
  • 5+ years of experience with experience in design, implementation, and management of SQL Server High Availability Groups with disaster recovery on SQL Server 2016 or higher
  • 3+ years of experience with the architecture and management of enterprise level SQL Server Always-On High Availability groups. (SQL 2016 or higher)
  • 3+ years of experience with data security with regards to Confidential Unclassified Information
  • 2+ years of experience with SQL waits, locking, blocking and resource contention
  • 2+ years of experience with database performance optimization
  • 2+ years of experience with migration projects, particularly to cloud-based systems such as Azure
  • United States Citizenship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
  • Advanced certifications in database management or related fields
  • 2+ years of experience with federal contracts, including STIG, NIST, SOC auditing, CUI, PII/PHI
  • 2+ years of experience with change management systems, such as ServiceNow and Jira
  • 2+ years of experience with other database systems and platforms beyond SQL Server, Azure, and PostgreSQL

The salary range for this role is $124,500 to $239,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
