The Director, Optum Rx Portfolio Marketing is accountable for leading portfolio-level marketing strategy that strengthens how Optum Rx defines, organizes, and activates its value story across products, services, new business priorities, and cross-business growth initiatives.
This leader translates Optum Rx business strategy, portfolio priorities, product evolution, and audience needs into clear value narratives, portfolio messaging frameworks, and strategic marketing direction that help the organization show up as one holistic pharmacy care business while continuing to transform and evolve.
This role is distinct from Brand Reputation and Growth Strategy. That team owns Optum Rx-wide reputation, perception-shaping campaigns, campaign management, channel orchestration, and campaign performance measurement. The Senior Director, Optum Rx Portfolio Marketing owns portfolio value strategy, new product and new model narrative development, cross-business strategic initiatives, portfolio messaging architecture, and strategic interpretation of brand health and key brand metrics to inform long-range portfolio positioning and business strategy.
Reporting to the VP, Product, Portfolio & Content Marketing, this leader partners closely with Optum Rx product marketing teams, business-aligned marketing teams, Growth & Retention, Communications, Enterprise Marketing, content, creative, innovation, analytics, product, and line-of-business leaders. The role requires enterprise judgment, solid narrative leadership, and the ability to connect business strategy, audience insight, and portfolio differentiation into clear, actionable marketing strategies.
This leader operates through cross-functional influence, business strategy partnership, portfolio narrative ownership, product and initiative launch strategy, and disciplined alignment across Optum Rx teams. The role helps ensure portfolio-level marketing work is clear, differentiated, scalable, and connected to business priorities across clients, members, patients, providers, pharma manufacturers, internal stakeholders, policymakers, and thought leaders.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Own Optum Rx portfolio marketing strategy, translating business priorities, product evolution, audience needs, and portfolio growth objectives into clear value narratives, messaging frameworks, strategic recommendations, and activation guidance
- Develop and operationalize Optum Rx's enterprise and portfolio value story, turning business strategy into clear, compelling, audience-relevant messages with proof points that support differentiation and growth
- Lead portfolio narrative development across Optum Rx products, services, and business lines, ensuring individual offerings connect into a cohesive, differentiated whole and reinforce how Optum Rx operates as a holistic pharmacy care business
- Lead cross-business new product, new offering, and business strategy initiatives, including narrative strategy for emerging models and enterprise transformation priorities that explain how Optum Rx continues to evolve, innovate, and deliver value
- Shape marketing strategy for new offerings, ventures, and emerging growth areas, partnering with product, business, sales enablement, communications, content, creative, and Growth & Retention teams to define strategic positioning, priority audiences, key messages, and activation needs
- Monitor brand health indicators, portfolio-level brand metrics, audience insights, market signals, competitive dynamics, and business priorities to identify broad strategic initiatives that strengthen the Optum Rx portfolio over time; partner with analytics, reputation, and performance teams for formal campaign measurement, attribution, and reputation reporting
- Build and maintain portfolio messaging architecture, naming inputs, value proposition frameworks, and narrative guardrails that improve clarity, consistency, and differentiation across products, audiences, and marketing teams
- Drive value activation across executive leadership, marketing, communications, content, creative, sales enablement, and business stakeholders so priority narratives are consistently understood, adopted, and applied across the organization
- Partner with cross-functional teams to develop strategic briefs, launch narratives, business initiative messaging, audience journey inputs, and content direction that support integrated experiences across the full audience journey
- Advance cross-portfolio marketing planning by harmonizing portfolio-level priorities, messaging, and strategic workstreams across business partners, improving consistency, reach, efficiency, and clarity without owning brand reputation campaign execution
- Support development and adoption of centralized portfolio marketing tools and resources, including value proposition frameworks, Content Hub assets, message libraries, strategic playbooks, and other scalable resources that help teams activate portfolio narratives with consistency
- Develop long-range portfolio marketing recommendations informed by audience insights, growth opportunities, market shifts, product roadmaps, brand health signals, and competitive intelligence
- Serve as a senior strategic partner to business-aligned marketing, product marketing, Growth & Retention, Communications, Enterprise Marketing, sales enablement, analytics, content, creative, legal, compliance, and line-of-business leaders to align portfolio strategy with business outcomes
- Lead complex, ambiguous, cross-functional initiatives with solid operating discipline, executive-ready communication, clear decision support, and accountability for measurable progress against portfolio strategy goals
- Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). The Company may adopt, vary or rescind these policies and directives in its absolute discretion and without any limitation (implied or otherwise) on its ability to do so
