The Senior Director of Communications leverages communications expertise, business acumen and interpersonal skills to design and deliver internal communication programs that are integrated with the business strategies and objectives for UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual (E&I). This position leads key projects to advance E&I business priorities through communications campaigns including executive (CEO) communications, message platform/narrative development, and editorial strategy. This position is part of the E&I communications team and leads a team of three communications professionals. This role reports to the vice president of communications for UnitedHealthcare E&I UnitedHealthcare Operations & Experience and the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement communications programs that drive E&I employee engagement and business results by clearly prioritizing messaging and inspiring employees to contribute their best toward our mission – to help people live healthier lives
  • Develop and manage relationships and effectively interact with a range of stakeholders, including the CEO and other senior executives, to create and execute internal communications plans that advance business priorities
  • Manage, coach and develop a team of internal communicators to support geographical markets, lines of business and functional areas including Local Markets, National Markets, Ancillary & Individual (A&I), and the People Team
  • Lead content development for marque events including E&I Week, Annual Customer Forum, and UHG Investor Conference
  • Oversee the communications strategy and execution for M&A activity
  • Partner closely with UnitedHealthcare E&I senior People Team partners on projects related to organizational structure, change management and employee engagement in the ongoing development and articulation of key company story lines and messages that will resonate and strengthen E&I’s connection with employees, including all I&D initiatives.
  • Participate actively in shared services and broader UHC and UHG Corporate Communications department meetings in addition to key meetings including investor conference and large customer meetings
  • Align and govern communications across business segments and external communications to ensure consistency of best practices, and appropriate customization
  • Serve as thought leader in aligning communications strategy with corporate mission and goals
  • Lead our approach to two-way internal feedback channels, leveraging internal media as appropriate
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders as needed and support internal peers’ relationships with their respective stakeholders
  • Embody and promote UHG corporate values and ethics and demonstrate exemplary organizational skills and attention to detail

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of communications experience within a matrix organization
  • 10 years of project management experience
  • 10 years of professional writing and editing experience
  • 4+ years of people management and leadership experience
  • Internal communications experience
  • Experience working with and consulting senior executives
  • Integrated communications experience 
  • Experience translating technical and scientific information into layman’s terms

 

Preferred Qualification:

  • Combination of Corporate and Agency communications experience

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
