This is a new position for our high growth Arizona & New Mexico markets. The Marketing Communications Specialist – Arizona & New Mexico will regularly interact with team members locally and regionally. The position will be hands-on supporting key ongoing marketing initiatives.

As part of the care delivery arm of Optum, the Marketing Communications Specialist is responsible for marketing support of three ongoing categories of initiatives in both the Arizona and New Mexico markets. 

First and most importantly, the position will provide support for external public relations and internal communications. The position will work with external public relations vendors to recommend appropriate employed providers and subject matter experts for pitches / bylines, coordinate internal approvals and assist with tracking results. This position will identify and co-write articles for multiple monthly newsletters including managing the production and distribution of two broker newsletters.

Second, this position will take the planning and on-site lead for Optum at community walks in Phoenix and Tucson. The position will also assist with planning of other events including, but not limited to Medicare education events, tables at 3rd party health fairs, doctor talks, provider dinners and town halls. The position may provide on-site logistic support at designated priority events in Arizona.

Third, the position will provide marketing support for the promotion of retention services including community centers, annual wellness visits as well as initiatives to reduce gaps in care. This position will be responsible for regular merchandising of retention service promotion in owned clinics ensuring that clinics are sufficiently stocked with marketing collateral and that collateral is displayed consistently across clinics as well as according to set merchandising standards.

The position is hybrid (60% in office or field / 40% remote) and based within commuting distance of the Optum office in the northern part of Phoenix, AZ near I-17 and the 101. Travel requirements will typically consist of regularly visiting clinics and attending events and health fairs in within the Phoenix metropolitan area. May also include occasional events and health fairs in Flagstaff, Prescott, Sedona and Tucson. The position will report to the Director of Marketing – Arizona & New Mexico.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Provide internal support for external public relations vendors by aligning potential stories with providers or internal subject matter experts and obtaining required internal approvals. This position will not be responsible for pitching stories to media outlets.
  • Plan editorial calendar, identify stories and co-write monthly articles for multiple newsletters
  • Plan and coordinate Optum’s presence at community walks and charity events
  • Assist with the planning and execution of other lead acquisition and retention events
  • Partner with the regional and local team members to support ongoing retention programs by coordinating the creation and distribution of promotional collateral
  • Visit assigned clinics on a scheduled basis to ensure lobby marketing meets pre-set standards, resupplying clinics with marketing materials as needed
  • Provide executive-level report outs on assigned projects including attendance and spend against budget
  • Cultivate relationships with applicable internal business partners to drive support, understanding and collaboration for events and marketing support
  • Ensure that marketing activities and materials comply with CMS regulations and UnitedHealth Group standards

Required Qualifications: 

  • 3+ years of experience in public relations, internal communications, journalism, or marketing with a communications focus
  • Experience in marketing, public relations or internal communications in a health care or insurance setting

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 3+ years of concurrent general experience in at least two of the following:
    • Experience in planning, supporting, and staffing marketing, sales or community events in a hands-on, tactical role
    • Experience in deadline-driven marketing role in a matrixed environment
    • Experience managing multiple priorities and cross functional interactions with teams including but not limited to creative services, compliance, and operations
    • Experience prioritization and time management in a high-volume templated work environment
    • Experience in executing ROI focused marketing initiatives
    • Experience in a coordinator, specialist, or manager position related to marketing, internal communications or public relations
  • Experience working directly with healthcare event organizers and clinic staff
  • Experience with executing B2B, B2C and B2B2C marketing tactics
