Investment management at UnitedHealth Group oversees the investment of approximately $80 billion in capital, adhering to investment policies, guidelines, and regulatory limits. Investment Management is a critical function within our organization, engaging with stakeholders such as the board of directors, senior management, regulators, and credit rating agencies. This role involves balancing regulatory compliance with the goals of income generation, portfolio value maximization, and risk management.

As an Associate Director of Investments, you will be crucial in overseeing insurance investment portfolios and managing external managers. Your responsibilities will include monitoring the investment markets and staying updated with the latest financial news. There is a focus on researching and analyzing fixed income investments with exposure to venture capital and private credit. You will work to prudently enhance investment income, develop and manage models, and assist in portfolio management decisions. Being in a highly regulated industry, representing Investments and being the subject matter expert on policies and processes in regulatory exams and audits is critical. Collaboration and effective communication with other treasury teams is essential due to the complexity of our organizational structure. Additionally, you will be involved in reporting requirements, utilizing tools such as Bloomberg PORT and PowerBI.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide oversight of UnitedHealth Group’s (UHG) investment decisions and ensure that all investments are within UHG’s investment policy and investment policy guidelines
  • Proactively, process overall market, economic and investment information/data from outside sources applying it for idea generation and investment decision making
  • Oversee and provide security research using internal (e.g. PAM, Bloomberg, FactSet) and external (e.g. third-party research, outside advisors) sources for purposes of determining creditworthiness. Identify and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the features of a bond that would materially affect its performance. Support Portfolio Manager with reviewing and authoring memos and responding requests for portfolio/investment information
  • Identify, measure and monitor the potential risks to the investment portfolios and individual investments
  • Lead and conduct portfolio and asset allocation analysis based on a variety of factors including business strategies and developments, market conditions, issuer, and credit rating concentrations
  • Recommend appropriate benchmarking for the different investment mandates
  • Provide research and decision support related to special projects as needed
  • Assist with the management of external vendor relationships and inquiries from internal and external sources
  • Ensure adherence to compliance requirements and provide reporting as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Math, Actuarial Science or significantly related field
  • 7+ years of experience in investment management, trading, or related field
  • Private credit experience
  • Experience with Bloomberg and PowerBI (or related application)
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word), with the ability to leverage these tools for reporting and analysis
  • Proven solid analytical abilities, both quantitative and qualitative, to assess and manage investment risks and opportunities
  • Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work in a team-oriented environment, balancing the structure of monthly and quarterly reporting deadlines with the dynamic nature of financial markets and business conditions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CFA designation or progress towards a CFA designation
  • Experience working in a large corporation or insurance company
