As a Senior Healthcare Economics Analyst, you will research and investigate key health and medical expense trends and potential interventions for members in value-based care contracts.  Develop a deep understanding of people, process, and technology improvements that can favorably impact medical cost trend and health care affordability.  This will require review of healthcare industry publications and quantitative analyses of Optum Health-specific data including census, cost, and utilization.  Analysts will share recommendations with key business partners using reports in Tableau, Power BI, and/or Excel, and will present findings and recommendations in meetings.  SQL is the primary tool that you will use to explore and analyze healthcare data.

Primary Responsibilities:

TECHNICAL 

  • Handle complex and occasionally messy data from various sources, including relational databases  Possess ability to clean, join, evaluate, and test the data for its accuracy
  • Perform root-cause analysis to identify and propose solutions to issues in code and/or underlying data sources
  • Create and update automated or repeatable processes, ensuring accurate and efficient processing of data and analyses

ANALYTIC 

  • Conduct ad-hoc analyses to gain a deeper understanding of key trends or member populations
  • Utilize SQL skills to analyze complex datasets, identify trends, evaluate initiatives, monitor program development, and validate data

BUSINESS COLLABORATION 

  • Work in partnership with clinical and operational stakeholders to develop business cases including anticipated costs, savings, and ROI for new, or modifying existing, clinical programs
  • Support efforts to process data from multiple sources and make accessible to key analytic stakeholders through targeted reporting; assess customer needs to develop interactive, user-friendly reports that facilitate data exploration and respond effectively to analytic questions
  • Master storytelling using Tableau, Excel, and PowerPoint to deliver actionable insights to a diverse set of stakeholders – clinicians, administrators, financial analysts
  • Provide ongoing communications with key stakeholders on project prioritization, status, results, and conclusions from analyses

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT 

  • Accumulate expertise in health care affordability and communicate findings and interpretations of research and analysis
  • Possess a growth mindset as an analyst; stay curious and informed about sources of medical cost trend within the US health care industry
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and best practices in data analytics, business intelligence tools, and data management to ensure optimal performance and innovative solutions in analytical projects

Required Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience in SQL in applicable corporate or academic experience in data analytics-examining and summarizing data to uncover business insights
  • Proficiency performing analytic tasks in SQL
  • Proficiency with MS Excel (practical experience working with pivot tables, advanced formulas, graphs, VLOOKUPs), Word, and PowerPoint

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Tableau or Power BI
  • Experience with Python, R, SAS or comparable coding language
  • Healthcare analytics experience (claims, provider, member, clinical, network contracting)
  • Proven solid verbal and written communication skills, including ability to present ideas and concepts effectively

The salary range for this role is $59,500 to $116,600 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
