The Nurse Manager organizes and directs the clinical activities of a specified department(s) and/or function(s); coordinates staff to insure that effective clinical services are provided, and quality standards are met. Staffing consists of registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, medical assistants, phlebotomists and other clinical technicians. Responsible for efficient and consistent management of clinical operations. Works with the Clinical Support Services Department in the development and updating of operational protocols, insures compliance with organizational policy and procedures. May be responsible for preparation of data, and information and/or reports through use of computer applications.

Job Relationships:

Reports directly to either the facility Site Director/Manager and in some cases, Director of Nursing Operations and/or VP of CSS. The Nurse Manager may have frequent interactions with members of the Clinical Support Services Department on various topics requiring clinical expertise in various areas of responsibility. Has regular interaction with group medical director, physicians, subordinate employees, patients, health plans and peers.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Where the oversight of staff is required: Monitor and evaluate employee job performance in a timely fashion; working knowledge of applicable state and federal labor laws which impact employee vacation time, sick time, FMLA and OT compensation. Assure and implement quality medical management and cost containment health services to patients. Considerable and regular engagement in a full range of supervisory duties and responsibilities among assigned staff.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Interpret, communicate and implements organizational policy and procedures; monitor compliance; make recommendations for improvement
  • Ensure that all department activities reflect organizational standards for quality and responsiveness to patients by continually evaluating practices and acting as a role model
  • Contribute and attend appropriate meetings for area of function/responsibility
  • Oversee and manage all personnel related functions of staff in area of responsibility
  • Select, mentor, motivate and direct development and evaluation of staff; may devise health related educational programs for professional and non-professional staff
  • Act as a resource person for the facility in specified area and body of knowledge
  • Act as communication mechanism between levels of staff on all pertinent issues both within and outside area of responsibility where appropriate
  • Facilitate and manage programs by preparing for and participating in audits, meetings, committees and/or surveys
  • Screen all information prior to submission for accuracy and integrity, routing appropriately when incomplete, using approved criteria and guidelines
  • Works collaboratively with other site nurse managers/site directors for staffing issues organization wide
  • Review, assess level of care and make recommendations for alternative forms of appropriate care to physician
  • Work with site director/manager to develop budget estimates or other information concerning financial requirements; monitors expenditures, purchases and other actions to insure compliance with budget guidelines and effective delivery of service
  • Other duties as assigned by supervision

  • May be assigned special project or other assignments and work tasks that are generally within the scope and level of the position, and relative to the need for flexible Company operations

Any combination of educational and work experience that would be equivalent to the stated minimum requirements would qualify for consideration of this position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Nursing
  • Current State of California RN licensure
  • BLS (American Heart Association)
  • 3+ years of experience in health care (acute care setting) as a practicing Registered Nurse, one year of which must have been engaged in supervisory and/or management duties and responsibilities

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree as stated above with emphasis or additional course work in management
  • ACLS and/or PALS certification
  • Certified Professional in Health Quality (CPHQ) and Certified Case Manager (CCM)
  • 5+ years of experience as stated above and/or a variety of settings including UM, ER Critical Care

The salary range for this role is $89,800 to $176,700 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
