We are searching for a leader in our health economics and outcomes (HEOR) group. The Primary Data Collection (PDC) Director has an extensive background in research that involves the collection of data from primary sources, including person-reported as well as documented sources. Successful leaders must have an entrepreneurial spirit—are innovative by nature, and always working to create new approaches and products, and services. The PDC Director supports internal teams and initiatives and develops solid relationships both internally and externally. The PDC Director not only advises internal researchers and external customers on strategy and evidence generation planning, but works actively on research initiatives from scientific protocol development through dissemination.
Job Components:
- Drive the strategic vision and growth strategy for the PDC business; lead HEOR business development efforts to expand the PDC business
- Execute and provide oversight of studies in area of responsibility
- Work with HEOR leadership and other Optum business units to support innovation and identify and pursue new offerings, business opportunities, partnerships and collaborations in the PDC area
- Participate in leadership of HEOR operations
- Present in public forums on key topics of expertise in the HEOR space

Primary Responsibilities:
- Grow the business through client relationships, new service offerings, and a reputation of consistently superior customer service and quality
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, clients and industry leaders
- Develop and execute growth strategies to increase market presence and revenue
- Lead the PDC area of Optum’s HEOR consulting business:
- Support business development activities (including, but not limited to, development of proposals and face-to-face client engagement) to support pharmaceutical and device manufacturer client needs
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including technical, clinical and commercial teams to ensure alignment of research objectives with business goals
- Assess staffing needs and hiring/recruitment of research staff required to support area of responsibility
- Resource and oversee execution of retrospective database, survey, chart abstraction, and other PDC studies
- Advance dissemination of results via manuscript, reports, and conference presentations
- Collaborate and coordinate with other intercompany resources to support your business
- Oversee project teams and manage study budgets and timelines
- Mentor and train new research staff as needed

Required Qualifications:
- 10+ years of research experience designing and conducting PDC studies.
- 5+ years of project management experience
- Experience conducting HEOR and PDC research in various disease areas and with pharmaceutical and device therapies
- Demonstrated experience in management of teams across multiple functional areas
- Demonstrated experience in data driven research. Record of publication.
- Experience with secondary data assets, administrative claims databases or electronic medical records data
- Ability to travel: 4 – 5 trips to clients and/or conferences annually
- Legally authorized to work in the US without any restrictions. Proof will be required

- Attention to detail – Ability to understands data thoroughly and works in a “hands-on” manner with senior researchers and analytic teams throughout all phases of HEOR studies to ensure highest quality
- Verbal communication – Ability to convey thoughts in a clear, concise, and accurate manner. Listens carefully and asks questions when necessary to ensure understanding. Provides clear input and direction to internal study teams. Capitalizes on opportunities to provide direct report with on-going professional and developmental feedback
- Written communication – Ability to convey findings in a clear, concise, and accurate manner with appropriate formality and grammar. Monitors quality and consistency of deliverables in area of responsibility
- Computer literacy – Ability to use computer hardware and software as productivity tools in performing work-related tasks. Enters information into company-required tracking programs with minimal outside assistance
- Customer service – Ability to provide customers with prompt, complete, and accurate information. Quickly identifies needs and follows through on commitments made. Maintains a high energy level when interacting with customers. Demonstrates professionalism and presents a positive image of the company. Looks for continuing opportunities to be consultative to help advance client’s business objectives
- Development of self and others – Ability to identify personal career development. Seeks additional training and assistance with additional responsibilities and feedback on performance
- Planning & organizing – Ability to plans work effectively to meet goals and ensure timely completion of assignments. Manages time effectively. Consistently meets timelines. Proactively notifies other members of the HEOR leadership team of any difficulties with balancing workload and of assistance needed for direct reports
- Problem solving & decision making – Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions. Focuses on resolving problems and makes decisions in a timely manner. Promptly notifies project team, direct reports, HEOR leadership (as appropriate) of the problem and any decisions made
- Relationship building – Ability to maintain positive relationships with HEOR colleagues. Demonstrates honesty and integrity in dealing with others. Resolves conflicts with others promptly and effectively. Accepts constructive feedback
- Technical knowledge – Displays full knowledge Optum’s data assets, their appropriate use, study design, and HEOR procedures
- Area knowledge – Ability to portray good knowledge of the disease and/or data under study and leverages clinical personnel in or associated with HEOR
- Work habits – Demonstrated commitment, dedication, cooperation, positive behavior, adaptability and flexibility with changes in responsibilities and duties. Meets timelines and follows up without being prompted. Plans travel time well and makes effective use of time

The salary range for this role is $124,500 to $239,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
