Optum Behavioral Care provides behavioral health services in communities across the country.  Safety for our staff, patients, and visitors is the top priority for our national healthcare business.  

Candidates in this role must have experience developing, implementing, and assessing Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (EOHS) programs, procedures and training in accordance with federal, state and local rules and regulations. A qualified candidate will have expertise in programs such as Workplace Violence Prevention, emergency preparedness and response, hazard communications, chemical safety, personal protective equipment, respiratory protection, blood borne pathogens safety, medical surveillance, laboratory safety, injury and illness prevention, and worker’s compensation.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Lead implementation efforts for environmental health and safety minimum standards through program development, including policies, procedures, guidelines, consultation, training, and education.  Manage and track program implementation efforts, data, metrics for multiple facilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge of applicable EOHS regulatory requirements (local, state, Federal).  Research and provide current occupational health related regulatory requirements and guidelines available through Occupational Safety and Health
  • Administration (OSHA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other best practice resources
  • Evaluate EOHS programs and services against accreditation standards and contractual requirements. Assist with preparedness for external and regulatory audits
  • Manage risk mitigation and coordinate associated reporting and communications.  Work with business leaders on issue resolution and corrective action plans 
  • Implement process improvement activities for EOHS to address areas of non-compliance or ensure procedures are followed
  • Provide advice to leadership on accident prevention/investigation.  Lead and conduct safety incident and accident investigation
  • Coordinate multi-site EOHS inspection and medical surveillance programs.  Conduct desktop, virtual or on-site surveys to validate adherence with safety standards for facilities/locations
  • Lead implementation efforts for safety standards through consultation, training, and education, in collaboration with the UHG EOHS team
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of EOHS Safety Policies and Procedures
  • Participate in annual review of programs and plans
  • Address environmental and workplace violence-related employee safety incidents by offering support and strategic recommendations to mitigate future risks. Additionally, communicate applicable lessons learned to enhance organizational safety protocols
  • Apply technical knowledge to resolve complex issues or hazard
  • Monitor injury trends and implement initiatives to reduce injuries, as required
  • Serve as an expert and mentor.  Promote a Culture of Safety in all work
  • Solve complex problems independently; proactively identify new solutions to problems
  • Develop and maintain solid working relationships with other related Health and Safety departments within the organization.  Develop and maintain solid working relationships with Enterprise working groups with EOHS responsibility and subject matter expertise

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in implementing and managing environmental health and safety programs
  • 3+ years of experience collaborating with occupational health and safety teams, with proven ability to support and enhance occupational health programs
  • 2+ years of experience within a matrix organization in healthcare
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint and SharePoint
  • Understanding of HIPAA, OSHA and other state/federal healthcare requirements and regulations
  • Proven solid communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to build solid working relationships
  • Ability to travel up to 10% time

Preferred Qualification:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM)
  • Experience with EOHS management systems, audits/surveys 
  • Expert Experience with Microsoft Excel (Pivot tables, look ups, filtering, sorting, creating/editing spreadsheets, graphs, charts)

The salary range for this role is $71,600 to $140,600 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
