Senior Software Engineer II
Key Responsibilities:
1. Technical Leadership – Backend, Frontend, and Cloud:
*Backend Development:
*Lead the design and development of robust, scalable backend systems, focusing on critical healthcare processes such as electronic health record (EHR) integration, claims processing, and patient management.
*Implement and maintain microservices architecture using technologies such as Java, Python etc, and design APIs (REST, gRPC, GraphQL) to support large-scale healthcare applications.
*Optimize backend services for performance and scalability, ensuring systems can handle millions of transactions daily and comply with industry standards like HIPAA.
*Work with both relational (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) to manage vast amounts of healthcare data efficiently and securely.
*Frontend Development:
*Architect and implement responsive and user-friendly frontend systems using modern JavaScript frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue.js.
*Ensure the frontend is secure and adheres to healthcare regulations, integrating with backend services for real-time data visualization, patient management, and provider interfaces.
*Lead the design of intuitive user interfaces for healthcare professionals and patients, focusing on enhancing the user experience while maintaining strict security standards.
*Cloud Infrastructure:
*Design and implement cloud-native solutions on platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, focusing on scalability, high availability, and disaster recovery.
*Leverage cloud services, including serverless functions (e.g., AWS Lambda), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and managed databases, to optimize system performance and reliability.
*Define and execute cloud strategies, including infrastructure as code (IaC) using tools like Terraform or CloudFormation, ensuring systems are highly available, resilient, and secure.
2. System Design and Architecture:
*Collaborate with architects and technical leaders to define the overall architecture of healthcare platforms, making key decisions on technology stacks, frameworks, and data storage.
*Develop technical roadmaps that align with product strategies and healthcare business goals, ensuring the software systems are scalable, maintainable, and adaptable to future needs.
*Perform high-level system design and detailed technical assessments to ensure all components align with the overall architecture and support healthcare-specific requirements like patient data privacy, interoperability, and compliance.
3. Healthcare Data Security and Compliance:
*Ensure all systems are designed with security in mind, adhering to industry regulations such as HIPAA, GDPR, and other healthcare-specific compliance standards.
*Implement secure communication channels, encryption protocols, and authentication mechanisms (e.g., OAuth2, JWT) to protect sensitive healthcare data.
*Work closely with security teams to perform regular code reviews, vulnerability assessments, and security audits across backend, frontend, and cloud services.
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration:
*Partner with product managers, healthcare professionals, and data scientists to translate healthcare requirements into technical solutions that address key challenges like patient data management, population health analytics, and claims processing.
*Collaborate with DevOps teams to ensure CI/CD pipelines are optimized for fast, secure, and compliant deployment of both backend and frontend services.
*Engage with business and operational stakeholders to ensure that system design meets both current healthcare regulations and future scalability demands.
5. Mentorship and Team Development:
*Act as a technical mentor for junior engineers, providing guidance on best practices in backend, frontend, and cloud development, while fostering a culture of continuous learning.
*Lead code reviews, design reviews, and architectural discussions within the engineering team to ensure quality, security, and scalability of the software systems.
*Promote a culture of innovation and collaboration, encouraging the exploration of new technologies and approaches to solve complex healthcare challenges.
6. Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
*Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends in healthcare technology, cloud computing, and software engineering, and assess their potential for application within the organization.
*Experiment with and integrate new tools and frameworks that can improve the development process, optimize system performance, or enhance security in healthcare applications.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
- 10+ years of experience in software development, with at least 3+ years in a senior or architecture-level position
- Proven experience designing and developing large-scale backend systems using technologies like Java, Python etc, with expertise in building microservices and APIs
- Expertise in frontend development using modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Vue.js), with a focus on performance and security
- Solid experience in cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, with deep knowledge of cloud services, containerization, serverless computing, and infrastructure automation
- Experience in implementing CI/CD pipelines and working in a DevOps environment, with a focus on continuous delivery and automation
- Solid understanding of relational and NoSQL databases, with experience managing large datasets and ensuring high availability, security, and performance
- Solid understanding of healthcare standards such as HIPAA, HL7, and FHIR, with a proven track record of developing secure and compliant systems
At UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We believe everyone – of every race, gender, sexuality, age, location and income – deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. Today, however, there are still far too many barriers to good health which are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups and those with lower incomes. We are committed to mitigating our impact on the environment and enabling and delivering equitable care that addresses health disparities and improves health outcomes – an enterprise priority reflected in our mission.
