This role reports to a UnitedHealth Group (UHG) Deputy Litigation Counsel leader and provides thought and practical leadership, is accountable for litigation matters across the enterprise, and provides leadership to one litigation professional.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks and privileges of the organization
- Protect the organization’s rights in contract negotiations, settlements and litigation
- Acquire deep knowledge of the industry and the specific business practices of UnitedHealth Group so as to best advise senior business leaders
- Manage all aspects of affirmative and defensive litigation and arbitrations involving the company; provide legal counsel in connection with internal investigations and responses to government inquiries; provide legal advice on complex and sensitive matters regarding various laws and regulations applicable to health care; help establish and implement creative and strategic initiatives that support the company’s internal and external stakeholders

Required Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree
- 10+ years of legal experience with a law firm, in-house legal department or government office
- Experience managing investigations and drafting complaints / demands in courts and arbitration forums
- Experience in complex civil cases for plaintiffs and defendants in Federal District and State Courts, as well as the AAA and JAMS
- First chair trial and/or arbitration experience
- Knowledge of health care and/or regulatory law
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience interacting with regulatory and law enforcement agencies
- Significant negotiation experience
- Familiarity with False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, state consumer protection and deceptive trade practices laws, RICO, Stark Law, HIPAA, ERISA, and various other healthcare laws and regulations, as well as Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance plans
- Understanding of health care benefit coverage and medical policy development
- Understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects
- Solid understanding of health insurance and/or managed care industry
- Solid understanding of business, accounting and finance topics
- Work as an Assistant United States Attorney, Assistant Attorney General and/or attorney with HHS
- Proven well-developed written and verbal communications skills
- Proven excellent presentation skills
- Proven success in collaborating across a matrixed business and legal environment
- Proven ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business unit needs
- Proven ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you’ll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $156,400 to $268,000 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
