Optum Bank is seeking a strategic and hands-on Director of Credit Data Science to lead the development and implementation of data-driven credit strategies. We are looking for expertise in building, implementing, and optimizing credit models, including familiarity and knowledge of machine learning (ML) models, and the ability to manage a team of data scientists. You are a hands-on coder with experience using data-driven insights to lead decision-making. You have a background in modeling and experience of Python, with demonstrated experience delivering solutions to complex credit risk challenges. As a Director, Data Science you will report to the Credit Officer for Consumer and Small Business Lending. This individual will be responsible for managing a team of data scientists and analysts, owning the end-to-end lifecycle of credit models, and driving innovation in underwriting, portfolio risk management, and customer lifecycle strategies. You will partner closely with Credit Risk, Model Risk Management, Product, Engineering, and Compliance teams to build scalable solutions that drive profitable growth while managing risk.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and mentor a team of credit-focused data scientists and analysts
  • Set the strategic direction for credit model development, monitoring, analytics and governance
  • Serve as a thought leader in the application of machine learning, AI, and statistical modeling to credit decisioning
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including model risk, product, engineering, and compliance, to integrate models into our workflows
  • Design scalable, accurate, and explainable credit risk models and models solving problems across the entire credit life-cycle using machine learning and traditional statistical techniques
  • Solid programming skills in Python, R, or similar languages; experience with SQL and cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, AWS)
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies
  • Analyze large datasets to identify trends and drivers of credit risk, ensuring applicable insights for partners
  • Develop approaches to feature engineering and data enrichment to improve model performance
  • Maintain existing models, ensuring they remain up-to-date with changing data and our needs
  • Provide strategic insights to executive leadership based on data science outcomes
  • Communicate technical concepts and model outcomes to non-technical partners

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of data science experience, focusing on credit risk modeling
  • 8+ years of experience in general processes around targeting, Fraud detection, acquisitions, Account management, collections
  • 8+ years of experience in Python and main libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, and TensorFlow/PyTorch
  • 8+ years of experience in statistical modeling, feature engineering, and machine learning algorithms
  • 8+ years of experience in credit risk scoring methodologies, regulatory frameworks, and model governance
  • 8+ years of experience scrapping data and parsing unstructured data
  • 8+ years of experience with Visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI etc
  • 5+ years of experience leading teams
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience developing and deploying machine learning models, especially in credit risk contexts
  • 5+ years of experience working with big data technologies and distributed systems (e.g., Spark, Hadoop)

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you’ll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $132,200 to $226,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
