The Associate Director of Communications is a key contributor to the Optum Insight communications team, responsible for shaping and executing strategic external communications that advance business priorities, strengthen market reputation and highlight the impact of technology-enabled health solutions. This role partners closely with leaders across the organization to build integrated executive visibility programs, manage issues and opportunities, and drive earned, paid, owned and shared strategies that elevate Optum Insight’s voice in the market.
You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
Strategic External Communications and Executive Visibility
- Develop and execute integrated external communications strategies that elevate Optum Insight’s market reputation and executive visibility
- Shape thoughtful, multi channel programs that include media engagement, digital content, social amplification and targeted visibility tactics
- Build compelling narratives and content for use across press, speeches, events, web and social channels
- Identify and elevate stories that demonstrate Optum Insight’s positive impact on customers, partners and communities
- Provide strategic counsel to senior leaders on visibility opportunities, message positioning and reputational considerations
- Build and maintain solid relationships across the communications ecosystem including External Affairs, Marketing, Product, Legal, Compliance and the People team
Issues and Crisis Communication
- Manage sensitive issues with strategic judgment and discretion
- Lead or support issue response planning for internal and external audiences
- Quickly assess reputational risks and provide guidance to senior leaders with clear path forward recommendations
Employee Engagement and Executive Visibility Support
- Support broad-scale employee engagement initiatives led by or involving Optum Insight executives
- Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure internal messages reinforce executive priorities when needed
- Write clear, compelling content tailored to specific audiences and channels
Executional Excellence
- Deliver communications campaigns and tactics that support organizational goals
- Enforce standards that ensure exceptional quality of writing, messaging and deliverables
- Measure communication effectiveness and identify opportunities to improve content, channels and strategy
- Provide guidance and mentorship to communication team members and contribute to a collaborative, high performing culture

Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years of communications experience within a matrixed organization
- 5+years of strategic communication planning and project management experience
- Extensive writing and editing experience with solid attention to clarity, consistency and tone
- Demonstrated success developing integrated communications strategies across paid, earned, owned and shared channels
- Experience advising and collaborating with senior executives
- Proven experience in issues and crisis response with significant business or reputational implications
- Ability to operate effectively in a complex, fast paced environment with multiple stakeholders
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in healthcare or B2B technology sectors
- Combination of corporate and agency communications experience
- Experience advancing executive visibility programs or thought leadership
- Social and digital communications experience including blogs, campaigns, podcasts or video content
- Experience with earned media strategies or contributing to external visibility efforts
- Exposure to marketing communications supporting growth initiatives

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you’ll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $112,700 to $193,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
