As the Lead Software Engineer you will support a mission critical (P1) API Marketplace platform within the UnitedHealthcare Provider organization. The platform serves as a centralized API gateway that enables providers, hospital systems, billing groups, vendors, and patients to securely access key healthcare functions such as eligibility verification, claims submission, prior authorizations, referrals, and cost share details (copays and coinsurance).

 

For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Architecture & Design
    • Produce scalable architecture designs and develop shared components or patterns that can be reused across products and teams
    • Define business problems and design technical solutions within enterprise or line of business architecture guidelines
    • Create design documents, articulate architectural decisions, and align with other lead engineers
    • Make build vs buy decisions, select tooling, and craft team specific architectural patterns
    • Ensure designs support organizational technical strategy and meet long term maintainability goals
    • Identify reuse opportunities and establish checks and validation mechanisms to confirm solution effectiveness
    • Maintain accountability for engineering quality, design health, and solving the intended business problem
  • AI
    • Design, develop and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business 
    • Challenges with emphasis on responsible use of AI
    • Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate tasks and drive
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship
    • Mentor junior and mid level engineers in 1:1 and small group settings
    • Influence team roadmaps, technology strategy, and cross team architectural decisions
    • Present and contribute to tech talks, brown bags, documentation sites, and internal blogs
    • Own external integration layer details and guide teams in resolving complex issues
  • Code Reviews & Standards
    • Lead by example with high quality Pull Requests (PRs) that follow best practices in size, clarity, and documentation
    • Provide actionable and timely feedback on PRs across accountable teams and resolve issues before merging
    • Serve as a sought after reviewer for complex components or patterns beyond immediate team boundaries
    • Continually improve code review processes and establish best practices
  • Coding & Implementation
    • Solve complex business and technical challenges by writing high quality, scalable, performant, and extensible code
    • Drive adoption of best practices, design patterns, and coding standards across teams
    • Define and enforce code management strategies (branching, merging, release flow)
    • Create documentation to support reuse and evangelize shared components
  • Automation & Efficiency
    • Ensure all solutions follow best practice automation standards with robust pipelines and CI/CD improvements
    • Implement performance and resiliency testing into core functional flows
    • Continuously refine processes, deprecate outdated practices, and optimize development efficiency
    • Own monitoring and optimization of pipeline usage, cost, and efficiency
  • Security
    • Develop and enforce security best practices, including threat prevention measures
    • Conduct code reviews for security vulnerabilities and own remediation for critical issues
    • Define strategy and automation of security/compliance tooling within the SDLC
    • Lead cross team adoption of strict security practices

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline
  • 12+ years of professional experience in backend or enterprise software development
  • 8+ years of hands on experience with Java/J2EE, including modern frameworks and best practices
  • 8+ years of experience designing and building RESTful APIs, working with databases, and leveraging Spring frameworks (Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, etc.)
  • 5+ years of experience with cloud platforms, such as AWS or Azure, including cloud native development and deployment practices
  • 5+ years working in Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, or similar)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Python, PySpark, Snowflake & Databricks experience  
  • Proven excellent analysis, process, problem solving and critical thinking skills 
  • Proven ability to change and adapt quickly, Excellent Team Player showcasing independence and ownership

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you’ll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $112,700 to $193,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
