A Lead Analyst / Statistician (LA-S) in the Value and Evidence Consulting of Optum Life Sciences, an Optum Company, will work with a variety of research projects. This employee will work with individual level data created by programmers. The LA-S is responsible for creating project specification, data verification, descriptive, multivariable statistical analysis, creating tables for final reports, and interpreting results. The LA-S will also participate in research infrastructure projects and act as a statistical consultant for the researchers and other analysts.

Primary Responsibilities:

Analysis for research studies (80%) may include (but are not limited to):

  • Responsibility for creating programming specification, data dictionary, and data verification
  • Executing descriptive and multivariate analysis and verifying results. Understand the impact on results by using different analysis methods
  • Creating tables and providing key texts for findings for the reports
  • Working closely with Researchers to identify issues in programming and analysis and proactively offer solutions to the issues 
  • Complete project analysis documentation according to department standards
  • Inform project timeline and budget impact while completing work within budgeted project hours and report progress back to project manager
  • Mentoring junior staff for writing programming specifications, running verification and conducting analysis
  • Work directly with PhD level Researchers to complete research projects
    • Assisting Researchers with design of protocol by providing consultation of statistical methodology, patient sampling, questionnaire design
    • Anticipate study design and data issues (e.g. potential bias, data availability, and project timelines) and provide suggestions to PhD-level Researchers
    • Review and create client-ready results in tables/figures/graphs and inform study reports
    • Interpret analytic results and provide analytic input and quality review for final reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, posters and presentations
    • Write custom SAS programs to verify the creation of analytic dataset and explore source claims or clinical data
    • Communicate study results to Research Lead or internal/external client, providing interpretation and calling out unexpected results
    • Document study process and changes to ensure compliance with SOPs and audit readiness

Infrastructure projects (15%) may include (but are not limited to):

  • Lead 1 – 2 infrastructure initiatives to support department processes and efficiency improvements
  • Developing / maintaining standard programs for the department standard library with focus on analytic programs
  • Understand data provenance and monitoring new data being incorporated into our research data source and understanding how to use the new data for project development and analysis

Documentation and training (5%) may include (but are not limited to):

  • Participation in maintenance of project reference materials and review with new employees
  • Training new employees on applications used by the department

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher)
  • 6+ years of experience with SAS, R, Stata, SQL or similar programming
  • 3+ years of experience in HEOR, primary or secondary data in managed care/health care/pharmaceutical claims/EHR data or clinical trials in a research capacity
  • 2+ years of experience summarizing and presenting research results
  • Intermediate level of experience in project management skills, including ability to prioritize, coordinate the work of others, meet deadlines and follow through on completion of complex projects
  • Intermediate level of ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical co-workers
  • Intermediate level of ability to execute multi-step data management tasks, recognize technical problems and solve with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with additional programming languages or platforms (e.g. SQL, R, Python, Tableau, Microsoft Access, Visual Basic for Applications, Microsoft Azure or AWS)
  • Knowledge of medical claims coding
  • Proven ability to conceptualize and plan research studies and bring them to completion

The salary range for this role is $89,800 to $176,700 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
