UnitedHealthcare’s Employer & Individual (“E&I”) Legal team supports an array of diverse businesses primarily serving the commercial group and individual markets. E&I Legal seeks an outstanding and experienced Associate General Counsel to serve a high-performing, growth-oriented Specialty Benefits business (which includes dental, vision, and financial protection) as well as the sales and marketing team driving innovative product and consumer-acquisition strategies.
Positions in this function provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks, and privileges within UnitedHealthcare’s Employer & Individual segment. The impact of the candidate’s work will be at a national level and will include responsibility for protecting the organization’s rights while providing legal advice and guidance to the Specialty Financial Protection and Individual health insurance business segments. This includes providing a full range of legal guidance and services to senior business leaders and functional areas such as Sales/Marketing, Operations, Finance, Clinical, Regulatory Affairs, and others on mergers and acquisitions, transactional works, commercial law, contracts law, benefit law, insurance law, and regulatory and compliance matters.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Providing legal counsel on the following matters:
- The successful candidate will have a broad supporting responsibilities related to advancing the existing business and its growth goals, and ensuring regulatory risk mitigation
- Interpreting legal/regulatory requirements and their business implications at the federal and state level with potential advocacy on proposed changes
- Collaborating on new product and market entrances
- Support for the sales/account management initiatives
- RFP reviews for potential new/renewal customers
- Contract drafting/negotiation
- Regulatory matters
- Resolving customer issues
- Assist with litigation management, including evaluation and negotiation of pre-litigation matters where appropriate
- Antitrust issues

Required Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree
- Current license to practice law
- 5+ years of legal experience
- Knowledge of U.S., state contract, corporate health care and regulatory law
- Experience with regulatory agencies and administrative experience with state insurance regulations
- Understanding of health care benefit coverage and medical policy development
- Proven success in collaborating across a matrixed business and legal environment
- Demonstrated understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects
- Ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business unit needs
- Ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts
Preferred Qualifications:
- Managed care legal experience
- Solid understanding of health insurance and/or managed care industry
- Knowledge of Telephone Consumer Protection Act, related regulations, and state-specific enactments
- Well-developed written and verbal communications skills

The salary range for this role is $124,500 to $239,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with al minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
