In this key leadership role, you will oversee the development and execution of service delivery commitments to continuously drive productivity, quality, and profitable growth by effectively leading the Coding, CDI, and Revenue Integrity functions supporting Allina Health.

Under the guidance of the VP, Revenue Cycle Operations, the Director of Coding, CDI, and Revenue Integrity is responsible for providing strategic, financial, and operational leadership within this respective OptumInsight leadership position. This includes oversight of the day-to-day operations for assigned teams in accordance with accepted industry standards and practices and within established medical center(s) guidelines.

Primary Responsibilities 

The Director of Coding, CDI and Revenue Integrity RCM Services performs various functions in providing effective leadership and direction to the staff of the department including the following: Accountable for all aspects of client focused Acute and Ambulatory coding, CDI, Revenue

  • Assurance, and HIM Operations services delivery, including but not limited to driving delivery and execution against KPI’s and Service Level Agreement targets
  • Provide oversight and ongoing coaching, development and leadership to the coding team and ensure resource planning effective, execution and outcomes
  • Fosters effective communication and builds relationships effectively across applicable team members within Optum and Allina
  • Serves as an industry expert while leading and sustaining best practices as well as driving the Optum Operating Model for these respective functional services
  • Entails the management of all functions of the department, including monitoring budget, taking part in the development of programs, and carrying out leadership duties
  • Takes responsibility for how the department operates each day and ensures that work assignments are completed on schedule by providing effective monitoring to both quantity and quality of workflow
  • Manages client interaction and customer engagement where needed, as well as coordinating with client and internal teams
  • Drive organizational efficiencies and alignment while developing scalable and sustainable infrastructure and technology solutions
  • Work across a matrixed organization in a collaborative fashion to drive the mindset and cultural shift required to create a more streamlined process and improve the customer experience
  • Work collaboratively with the various departments to ensure deliverables are achieved in a timely manner
  • Sets team direction, resolves problems and provides guidance to members of own team
  • Adapts departmental plans and priorities to address business and operational challenges
  • Influences or provides input to forecasting and planning activities
  • Adhere to the ethical standards of coding as established by AAPC and/or AHIMA
  • Adhere to and maintain required levels of performance in both coding quality and productivity as established by OptumInsight
  • Other duties at the discretion of the VP

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ combined years of operational Coding, CDI and HIM leadership experience in a large multi-specialty hospital or equivalent health related organization
  • Experience leading a large team across distributed geographic regions
  • Experience working in a Level 1 trauma center and / or teaching hospital with demonstrated knowledge of complex procedures, major trauma ER encounters, cardiac catheterization, interventional radiology, orthopedic and neurology cases, transplant, and observation coding
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications and electronic medical records systems. Proven communication, organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% as needed for offsite clients and /or internal meetings, conferences, and training sessions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Solid experience working with offshore coding teams as well as multiple vendors
  • Experience with various systems including encoder (3M/Solventum, EPIC)
  • Successful experience working within a multifaceted organization
  • Intermediate level of experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications and electronic medical records systems. Proven communication, organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Proven personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to Optum’s Vision and Values
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management and medical staff 
  • Demonstrated ability to establish positive working relationships, effectively manage competing priorities, and accurately complete highly detailed work
  • Demonstrated ability to drive organizational change and lead process improvement and automation initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management and medical

The salary range for this role is $124,500 to $239,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
