As a Senior Actuarial Consultant within Optum’s Advisory – Forecasting & Insights team, you will play a pivotal role in healthcare analytics, helping to develop data strategies that improve health outcomes. You’ll collaborate with a diverse group of actuaries, pharmacists, and consultants to drive innovation, solve complex issues, and deliver impactful insights

The team analyzes historical data to breakdown and identify key drivers of claims costs and trends. Trend projection models are utilized to predict future claim costs and trends for use in financial forecasting and pricing activities

 

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely* from anywhere within the U.S., preferably in Minnesota, as you take on some tough challenges.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain advanced analytical models using healthcare claims and non-claims datasets to support financial forecasts and operational insights
  • Conduct detailed data extractions and analyses utilizing tools like R, Python, SQL, SAS, and Excel; identify root causes of complex issues; propose solutions; and implement process improvements
  • Create clear, client-ready deliverables—including reports, presentations, and visualizations—that effectively communicate insights
  • Lead discussions with clients and stakeholders to present findings, answer questions, and proactively manage timelines
  • Explore new analytical techniques and areas for development in collaboration with stakeholders to enhance capabilities
  • Troubleshoot and resolve modeling or process errors independently, partnering with subject matter experts as needed
  • Mentor junior team members by sharing technical knowledge and supporting their professional growth
  • Collaborate across departments to develop comprehensive, innovative solutions addressing complex healthcare challenges

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently progressing through the Actuarial exam track, with at least 4 exams passed
  • 4+ years of experience in healthcare, finance, or related analytics roles
  • 4+ years of proven experience working with large, diverse datasets (claim and non-claim data) to solve complex business problems
  • 4+ years of extensive experience designing and maintaining Excel-based models
  • 4+ years of experience in data extraction and analysis using R, Python, SQL, SAS, and/or VBA
  • Demonstrated ability to develop scalable, efficient models

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Credentialed Actuary (ASA or FSA)
  • 4+ years supporting healthcare consulting projects
  • 2+ years collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting analytical findings
  • Experience working on-site at our Eden Prairie, MN office and willingness to relocate
  • Passion for innovative healthcare solutions and continuous learning

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you’ll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $89,900 to $160,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
