Serving all of UnitedHealth Group’s digital technology needs, the CDO team is responsible for driving outcomes across nearly 30 million+ human lives with UnitedHealthcare insurance, a number which puts UHC at the top of the pack as the largest managed care provider in the United States.
Step into a pivotal leadership role as the Principal Architect and Security Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Consumer Engineering at Optum’s Chief Digital Office. You’ll drive secure, innovative digital solutions that transform healthcare experiences for millions, working closely with the security department and engineering teams to strategize and improve the security posture of applications. This is your opportunity to set technical direction, champion security best practices, and make a lasting impact on how consumers engage with healthcare technology.

For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Serve as the Security SME for Consumer Engineering, partnering with security and engineering teams to enhance the security posture of consumer-facing applications
- Set technical direction and drive alignment on secure architecture and solution design across multidisciplinary teams
- Resolve vulnerabilities, identify security issues, and establish security standards for cloud-based applications, with a strong focus on cloud security
- Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges, with emphasis on responsible use of AI
- Communicate technical strategies and security patterns effectively to diverse stakeholders, including senior leaders
- Stay current with industry-standard security practices, patterns, and technologies, and apply them to enterprise solutions
- Evaluate emerging trends to inform solution design and strategic innovation

Required Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in applicable area of expertise or 5 years equivalent experience in technical roles at architect or senior engineer level, plus 15+ years of experience in technology
- 6+ years of experience in commercial, consumer-facing cloud architecture (AWS preferred, Azure also valued), including implementing and integrating technology solutions spanning data engineering, cloud, system integration, solution design, development/configuration, and deployment
- 6+ years of experience dedicated to security-resolving vulnerabilities, setting security standards, improving application security posture, and working with industry-standard security patterns, practices, and technologies
- 6+ years of experience navigating complex business problems and secure solution options involving multiple domains and technologies
- 6+ years of experience facilitating and leading solution design, architecture, and delivery planning for security activities across multidisciplinary teams
- 6+ years of experience effectively communicating solutions and security patterns to a geographically diverse workforce, including senior leaders and various resource groups
- Experience designing, developing, and deploying AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges, with emphasis on responsible use of AI
Preferred Qualifications:
- IT security/risk assessment certifications
- Professional experience architecting and managing solutions on both private and public cloud platforms
- Experience working in healthcare, especially supporting patient journeys
- Expertise in security protocols, firewalls, vaults, cryptography, and authentication/authorization (MFA)
- Knowledge of security, privacy, and regulations pertaining to PHI, PII, or similar concerns

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you’ll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $132,200 to $226,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
