Caring. Connecting. Growing together.
With these values to guide us, our people are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we are honored to serve.
Optum is a global organization that delivers care, aided by technology to help millions of people live healthier lives. The work you do with our team will directly improve health outcomes by connecting people with the care, pharmacy benefits, data and resources they need to feel their best. Here, you will find a culture guided by inclusion, talented peers, comprehensive benefits and career development opportunities. Come make an impact on the communities we serve as you help us advance health optimization on a global scale. Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together.
We are seeking a talented UX Designer (Grade 26) to join the UX Design team for Optum® Crimson AI - an AI-enabled clinical analytics and business intelligence platform used by hospitals and health systems across the U.S. Crimson AI integrates directly with a health system's EHR and brings clinical, financial, scheduling and supply chain data together into a single modular platform, layering predictive analytics, AI-generated recommendations and a conversational AI experience on top of it. Analysis that once required weeks of manual data mining is now delivered in seconds.
This is a design role in which data is the product. Our users come to Crimson AI to identify an opportunity, understand what is driving it, and decide what to do next. Your work makes that path short, clear and trustworthy.
The role combines user experience design, product thinking, data visualization and AI-enabled design capabilities to deliver solutions that meet customer needs and business objectives. Working closely with Product Management, Engineering, Data Science and Business stakeholders, you will contribute to the design and evolution of complex digital products, transforming user insights and business requirements into engaging and effective experiences.
We work in short, iterative cycles in each Sprint. Designers here are active participants in shaping the work rather than recipients of finished specifications - you will help the team arrive at clarity rather than wait for it. Because our products sit on top of complex healthcare data and rapidly evolving AI capabilities, Product, Design, Data Science and Engineering deliberately open up a problem space together to build shared understanding, then converge quickly on a direction and deliver.
We are a closely knit team that shares work early, critiques generously and holds a high bar for craft. You will have real ownership of your product areas, direct access to the people who understand the data and the domain, and colleagues who genuinely enjoy solving these problems together.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Create wireframes, prototypes, design concepts and high-fidelity designs that effectively communicate product vision and functionality
- Apply user-centered design methodologies to ensure usability, accessibility, and adoption
- Build a thorough working understanding of the product and the business behind it, and ask the incisive early questions that establish the real user problem, the intended business outcome and the measures of success - then design against those rather than against a feature list
- Translate complex, multi-source healthcare data into actionable insight. Develop a working understanding of how the underlying data relates - what drives what, what can meaningfully be compared, and where the caveats sit - and design the information hierarchy, data presentation and visualizations so that users can see the signal, trust it, and act on it
- Conduct market research, competitive analysis and user discovery activities to inform product and design decisions
- Translate complex business requirements, workflows, and data structures into intuitive and user-friendly experiences
- Incorporate customer feedback, user research findings and market insights to refine designs and improve product outcomes
- Operate at pace: scope your own design approach, select the right fidelity for the decision at hand, and iterate as the team's understanding of the problem sharpens
- Perform AI-driven product design and prototyping, and apply AI tooling to accelerate your own exploration and delivery
- Follow and help strengthen the defined UX guidelines, standards, and best practices across teams
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering and Data Science teams throughout the product lifecycle to deliver high-quality user experiences
- Participate in usability testing, stakeholder workshops, design reviews, and design-thinking sessions
- Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment) The Company may adopt, vary or rescind these policies and directives in its absolute discretion and without any limitation (implied or otherwise) on its ability to do so
Required Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in UX / Product Design, including hands-on experience designing for data-rich or analytics-driven products
- Hands-on experience with user research, usability testing, stakeholder workshops, and design sprint activities
- Understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG / Section 508) and inclusive design principles
- Proficiency in Figma and other industry-standard design and prototyping tools
- Demonstrated product thinking: a track record of understanding product and business requirements quickly, asking the right questions of stakeholders, and producing design solutions that demonstrably serve both user needs and business goals. Portfolio should evidence the reasoning, not only the screens
- Proven ability to work with data hierarchy, data architecture and complex data relationships and to propose best-in-class designs for presenting them cdashboards, drill-downs, comparative and benchmarked views, and insight-led layouts that lead users to a decision
- Proven ability to work with self-direction in areas of ambiguity: you can take an early or evolving problem statement, structure it, seek out the information you need, and move it forward without every step being defined for you
- Proven ability to work effectively in a high-velocity, cross-functional environment - responsive to new information, efficient in revision, and pragmatic about sequencing what ships now versus what follows
- Proven ability to communicate product and design intent through demo-ready prototypes and clear narrative - work that travels well to customers, executives and internal stakeholders
- Proven ability to translate user needs, business goals and technical constraints into thoughtful design solutions
- Proven solid collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to articulate design rationale to product, engineering, data science and business audiences
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1+ years of experience building products in the US healthcare analytics domain, with familiarity with clinical workflows, healthcare data platforms, interoperability standards or population health analytics
- Experience designing for probabilistic or predictive outputs - communicating confidence, uncertainty and recommendation provenance so that users know how much to trust what they are seeing
- Experience partnering with Product / Data Science / ML teams and defining success metrics for AI-driven experiences, including generative AI, predictive analytics, conversational interfaces and intelligent workflows
- Knowledge of data visualization best practices and experience designing complex dashboards, reporting and analytics solutions
