Optum's Enterprise Digital Product (EDP) team focuses on advancing a digital-first UHC and Optum. We deliver consumer-centric experiences and optimal digital products that drive business growth by connecting enterprise solutions, improving digital self-service, and creating a comprehensive view of the consumer and their needs. We leverage technology, consumer-centered design, data and analytics to improve the consumer experience with the health care system, making it easier to access, and afford, high-quality care.
Our UnitedHealth Group mission of helping people live healthier lives and helping make the health care system work better for everyone serves as our why; our values unite us around how we will achieve it. When we follow our mission and live our values, we deliver quality solutions that will help change the health care system for the better.
In this role, you'll design the user interfaces, flows, and interaction patterns where search and AI come together, spanning traditional search, conversational search, and agentic search, including our companion-based agentic search experiences, Avery Search and Optum Assistant Search. You'll partner with teams across UHC, Optum Health, Optum Rx and Optum Finance, as well as our design systems and standards groups, to ensure search experiences are unified, discoverable, and impactful across web and mobile platforms.
As a Senior UX Designer focused on Agentic Search, you'll lead the design of next-generation search experiences that help consumers find, navigate, and act on information through AI-enabled systems. You'll work across the full range of search models, from traditional keyword search with filtering and faceted results to conversational search and agentic experiences where Avery Search and Optum Assistant Search act on a user's behalf.
Your work will focus on designing search interfaces end to end: the input experience, the presentation of results and AI-generated outputs, and the display of complex structured and unstructured data, handling refinement, disambiguation, and edge cases gracefully. You'll collaborate with product, engineering, research, and brand partners, working as an exceptional collaborator in Figma, to ensure designs meet the highest standards of usability, performance, and accessibility.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Design and deliver end-to-end search experiences across the full spectrum, from traditional search models (search bars, autocomplete, filtering, faceted navigation, results pages) to conversational search and agentic search, including our companion-based agentic search experiences, Avery Search and Optum Assistant Search
- Design how search results and AI-generated outputs are displayed and consumed, including results layouts, cards, tables, summaries, source citations, and visualizations of structured and unstructured data
- Create interaction models for agentic search behaviors that translate complex AI capabilities into transparent, controllable, and trustworthy user actions, including query understanding and refinement, AI-generated summaries with source attribution, suggested follow-ups, reasoning cues, and confirmation moments where the agent acts on the user's behalf
- Design conversational search patterns such as multi-turn refinement, context carry-over, and blended search-and-chat surfaces that guide users from a query to an answer
- Address complex UI states and edge cases, including zero-results, low-confidence responses, streaming/loading states, disambiguation, error handling, and escalation to human support
- Build, maintain, and share component-based design files and high-fidelity prototypes in Figma, exemplifying collaborative best practices (shared libraries, branching, variables, and Dev Mode handoff) across a distributed team
- Partner with design systems and standards teams to develop, document, and systematize search and conversational UI components (e.g., search inputs, results cards, filters, inline loaders, message formatting)
- Ensure search experiences excel in accessibility, supporting screen readers, keyboard navigation, adaptive text sizes, and dynamic, real-time interface needs
- Collaborate closely with product managers and engineers to define how search and AI responses are structured, rendered, and integrated, ensuring designs are feasible, performant, and scalable across web and mobile platforms
- Validate concepts through prototyping, usability testing, and metrics-driven iteration, with focus on findability, clarity, error recovery, and satisfaction
- Define and track search success metrics (e.g., task completion, zero-result rates, refinement rates, engagement, satisfaction) in partnership with analytics and research teams
- Present and defend design rationale to stakeholders, aligning decisions with user needs and business outcomes
- Contribute to design culture and practices while mentoring junior designers
- Work effectively within a matrixed environment, supporting multiple product domains and balancing competing priorities
- Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). The Company may adopt, vary or rescind these policies and directives in its absolute discretion and without any limitation (implied or otherwise) on its ability to do so
Required Qualifications:
- Graduate degree or equivalent experience
- 6+ years of experience in UX, product, or interaction design, with demonstrated expertise designing search, conversational, or AI-powered experiences
- Experience designing the display of complex data within search results and AI outputs (e.g., cards, tables, summaries, citations, inline visualizations)
- Experience contributing to design systems and UI kits with search or conversational components
- Experience partnering with engineering to shape how search and AI outputs are structured and integrated into user interfaces
- Experience working in matrixed organizations, partnering across product, engineering, and research teams
- Deep understanding of accessibility, inclusive design practices, and usability in dynamic, real-time interfaces
- Expert-level proficiency and collaboration in Figma, including components, variables, shared libraries, branching, advanced prototyping, and Dev Mode handoff with engineering
- Solid portfolio highlighting search interface work, including results presentation, data display, filtering and refinement, and conversational or AI-driven patterns
- Demonstrated ability to design scalable and accessible UIs across web, native mobile, and tablet platforms
- Demonstrated solid communication, storytelling, and facilitation skills, with the ability to present complex interaction challenges to diverse stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, UI/UX, Interaction Design, or related discipline
- Experience designing agentic or companion AI experiences, including agent transparency, autonomy boundaries, and user trust
- Experience using AI-assisted design and prototyping tools to accelerate exploration and delivery
- Working familiarity with search and AI concepts (e.g., relevance, federated search, retrieval-augmented generation, AI summarization) sufficient to partner credibly with engineering and data science
- Familiarity with search and conversational analytics as they pertain to UI success (engagement, completion, error recovery, satisfaction)
- Exposure to healthcare, financial services, or other complex consumer domains.
- Awareness of ethical and trust considerations in designing AI-enabled interfaces.
