Our Hospice Chaplains provide hospice patients and families with a spiritual assessment to address spiritual, pastoral, bereavement, and additional individual counseling needs. As a Hospice Chaplain, you will also be responsible for the coordination and provision of spiritual support, as indicated in each patient's Plan of Care, on an as-needed basis.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with staff, clergy, and community groups to enhance their sensitivity to the spiritual concerns of patients and families experiencing terminal illness and loss
  • Conduct initial spiritual assessments, as well as follow-up visits and contacts with hospice patients and their families
  • Remain non-denominational while on duty
  • Participate in patient conferences by exploring and assessing the potential spiritual needs of patients and families experiencing terminal illness and loss
  • Provide bereavement follow-up services as defined by Southwest Medical Hospice/ Optum procedures and CHAP standards
  • Maintain proper records of visits with patients and families
  • Make contact with clergy or appropriate representatives of patients and families, as indicated
  • Perform occasional liturgical assignments, such as the annual Service of Remembrance and monthly memorial services with staff
  • Develop and maintain a resource group of clergy to whom specific aspects of spiritual care may be delegated
  • Provide educational programs for community clergy, religious representatives, and lay representatives, as resources allow
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays (as needed/requested)

Required Qualifications:

  • Education, training, experience, or professional credentials appropriate to the practice of spiritual or pastoral care
  • Demonstrated understanding of hospice philosophy, end-of-life care, grief, loss, and family dynamics
  • Ability to provide spiritual care that is patient-centered and respectful of diverse religious, spiritual, cultural, and non-religious beliefs
  • Solid listening, communication, interpersonal, and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality
  • Ability to meet applicable federal, state, and local requirements for the role
  • Successful completion of required background screening and hospice onboarding requirements
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and ability to travel throughout the assigned service area


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree from an accredited seminary or school of theology
  • Certification in hospital and/or pastoral ministry
  • Hospice experience
  • Pastoral and/or chaplaincy experience in a healthcare setting
  • Bereavement support or counseling experience
  • Experience working with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) software
  • Computer skills, including the ability to type and navigate a Windows environment, including Microsoft Word and Outlook


Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $49,700 - $88,800 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
