The experience in healthcare can be complicated and hard to navigate, making an already challenging time that much harder for Consumers -especially when searching for care. Healthcare consumers today face a fragmented digital landscape, often navigating multiple disconnected search tools across products and platforms, each performing distinct functions that are not always integrated. This Senior Director of Unified AI Search role is aligned to the Get Care Experience journey team focused on the search processes and digital tools that enable members to find high-quality and cost-effective care with ease, personal and clinical relevance.
As Senior Director, Digital Product - Unified AI Search, you will lead the enterprise-wide transformation of search across all Consumer, Advocate, and Broker products at UHC and Optum. This role is accountable for uniting and elevating over seven distinct search experiences-including provider, benefits, clinical content, claims, pricing, and operational data-into a single, clinically accurate, AI-powered solution that empowers more than 50 million members and thousands of operational users.
You will drive product strategy, organizational alignment, and technical excellence to deliver a seamless, relevant, and intuitive search experience that transforms how consumers and operational teams access information. As the enterprise leader, you will architect and deliver a unified search platform, ensuring data is mapped to an agreed-upon clinical ontology and that search relevancy is continuously improved through advanced AI capabilities. Your scope includes influencing executive leadership, aligning business units, and driving change at scale to deliver a unified, clinically governed search experience.
Leading across product leaders and cross-functional teams, you will set the vision and strategy for search across our UHC portfolio, working in alignment with Optum leadership. You will be responsible for the end-to-end product lifecycle-from strategy and design to execution, launch, iteration, and optimization-ensuring interoperability and integration across disparate data sources and platforms. This will require you to drive alignment and collaboration across Consumer, Clinical, Technology, and Operations, building consensus and shared ownership for the search vision and roadmap.
In this role, you will serve as the principal advisor to executive leadership on our search strategy, clinical data mapping, and AI enablement, influencing capital planning and strategic investments. You will champion enterprise-wide transformation, breaking down silos and fostering a culture of innovation, agility, and shared ownership. Through compelling vision and strategic communication, you will inspire and energize teams, articulate the "why" behind the vision, and create momentum and shared purpose. As a solid presenter and influencer, you will build consensus among executive stakeholders and cross-functional leaders, ensuring alignment on priorities and outcomes and delivering breakthrough results for both consumers and operational teams.
Enterprise Scope & Strategic Impact
- Enterprise Accountability: Own the unified search strategy for all Consumer products, impacting over 50 million members and thousands of operational users across UHC and Optum
- Portfolio Leadership: Lead a large, multi-disciplinary product organization, including other senior directors and leaders, responsible for the full portfolio of search experiences
- Cross-Business Influence: Drive alignment and collaboration across multiple business units, including Consumer, Clinical, Technology, and Operations, to deliver a unified solution
- Executive Partnership: Serve as the principal advisor to executive leadership on search strategy, clinical data mapping, and AI enablement, influencing capital planning and strategic investments
- Change Leadership: Champion enterprise-wide transformation, breaking down silos and fostering a culture of innovation, agility, and shared ownership
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Vision & Strategy: Define and champion the enterprise vision for a unified, AI-powered search experience, integrating all vertical searches and roadmaps to deliver one unified AI-powered search. This includes provider search, benefits search, clinical content, and operational data across consumer, advocate, and broker experiences. Build and communicate strategic roadmaps, business cases, and investment priorities to executive stakeholders. Proactively identify and drive new initiatives that deliver measurable business value and competitive advantage
- Delivery & Execution: Lead across Digital Product organizations, enabling and influencing senior leaders and cross-functional teams to deliver the unified search platform. Oversee the full product lifecycle, ensuring interoperability, scalability, and clinical accuracy across all search experiences. Drive product management best practices, prioritizing work to maximize speed-to-market and impact at scale. Ensure data is mapped to an agreed-upon clinical ontology, partnering with clinical, data, and technology teams to maintain accuracy and relevance
- Outcomes & Measurement: Set and monitor enterprise-level Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) for search performance, engagement, and conversion. Use advanced analytics, AI/ML, and customer feedback to continuously improve search relevancy, speed, and personalization. Own the definition and achievement of KPIs that drive business outcomes, clinical quality, and member satisfaction.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Build consensus and drive alignment among executive stakeholders, business unit leaders, and cross-functional teams. Foster collaboration and shared ownership across UHG, serving as a catalyst for organizational change. Inspire and energize teams by articulating the "why" behind the vision, creating momentum and a sense of purpose
- Driving Transformation & Change Management: Serve as a catalyst for organizational change, fostering collaboration across silos to deliver an integrated solution. Inspire and energize teams by articulating the "why" behind the vision, creating momentum and shared ownership. Establish governance and frameworks that enable scalable execution while maintaining agility
- Research & Human-Centered Design: Partner with UX, Consumer Experience, and Clinical teams to leverage human-centered design, ensuring search results are accurate, relevant, and actionable. Incorporate voice of the customer, employee feedback, and clinical expertise into product decisions

Required Qualifications:
- 10+ years of digital product management experience
- 6+ years leading large, enterprise-level product teams and senior leaders
- 2+ years of experience with AI/ML-enabled search technologies
- Experience leveraging machine learning and natural language processing to improve search relevance and user experience
- Demonstrated experience in organizational transformation, vision setting, and influencing executive leadership
- Extensive experience planning and managing large-scale, strategic product initiatives and capital investments across matrixed organizations
- Deep understanding of healthcare data models, provider directories, benefits structures, clinical taxonomies, ontologies, and content integration
- Familiarity with enterprise-level platforms and frameworks supporting high-volume, secure, and compliant search experiences
- Expertise in enterprise SaaS digital experiences, data integration
- Skilled at building trust and driving alignment among senior leaders and cross-functional teams, even without direct authority
- Proven success delivering complex, multi-vertical digital products in healthcare or highly regulated industries, with enterprise-wide impact
- Proven solid written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to inspire and align stakeholders at all levels
- Proven advanced analytical and quantitative skills, with a track record of driving outcomes using OKR-based approaches
- Proven ability to challenge the status quo and lead cultural and operational transformation, fostering collaboration and breaking down silos
- Proven exceptional storytelling and simplification skills, distilling complex concepts into clear, relatable narratives for diverse audiences
- Comfortable and willing to travel up to 25% to UHG worksites in the future
Preferred Qualifications:
- 6+ years of demonstrated P&L experience with an understanding of key business drivers at the enterprise level
- Experience with AI-driven search, personalization, and natural language processing
- Familiarity with healthcare compliance standards (HIPAA, etc.)
- Clinical/healthcare background to ensure our search platform delivers accurate, relevant, and meaningful results that align with clinical standards and support safe, effective healthcare decision-making
- Deep expertise in search technologies, information architecture, and clinical ontologies
- Passion for improving healthcare accessibility and consumer engagement

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $159,300 to $273,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
