Position Summary

As a Software Engineer within our Magnus Lakehouse team under Optum Technology, you will play a key role in achieving our vision to build scalable, high-performing data and backend systems. In this role, you will work on exciting initiatives such as building high-throughput streaming pipelines, managing large-scale data lakehouse structures, and embedding AI-powered capabilities directly into our backend ecosystem. You will utilize and help improve innovative technologies like Python, SQL, Java microservices, Apache Kafka, and the Azure technology stack. This is a unique opportunity to build scalable software and integrate state-of-the-art AI-powered solutions that directly impact our business and the millions of lives we serve.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges with emphasis on responsible use of AI.
  • Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate tasks, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Evaluate emerging trends to inform solution design and strategic innovation.
  • Design, develop, and maintain high-quality backend software applications, microservices, and data pipelines using Python and Java.
  • Implement robust, high-performance database queries and data schemas utilizing SQL and database technologies.
  • Build, integrate, and deploy scalable streaming and messaging solutions using Apache Kafka.
  • Architect, build, and deploy cloud-native software and AI integrations within the Azure technology stack.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, architects, and quality engineers, to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality, performance, and security compliance.
  • Help automate development tasks, quality checks, or deployment functions as assigned with guidance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field; or 5 years of experience in Lieu of Degree

  • 2+ years of professional software development experience, including backend development and designing/coding/testing applications

  • 2+ years of experience with Python and Java microservices development

  • 2+ years of experience with SQL and relational/non-relational database technologies

  • 1+ year of experience building, deploying, or integrating software solutions with AI/ML APIs, large language models (LLMs), or cloud-based cognitive services

  • 1+ year of experience working with Azure cloud technologies (e.g., Azure Functions, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Lake, Azure OpenAI, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ years of experience utilizing Apache Kafka for real-time data streaming or message queuing
  • Experience building and deploying scalable AI-powered solutions, natural language processing (NLP) systems, or LLM-based integrations
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development team
  • Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Experience utilizing automated developer productivity tools (such as GitHub Copilot) in daily coding workflows
  • Familiarity with data lakehouse architectures and data engineering best practices

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $72,800 to $130,000 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
