As a Senior Data Engineer / Senior Database Administrator within Optum Technology supporting OptumCare products-including Curo, Order Utility, and Optum Pro-you will design, implement, and maintain resilient Postgres and MySQL database solutions in an Azure cloud environment. You will solve complex data architectural challenges, drive database performance tuning, implement task automation, manage Snowflake administration and security, and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to support high-impact clinical and care delivery applications.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Administer, maintain, and upgrade Postgres and MySQL databases in Azure across multiple environments to ensure optimal availability, scalability, and resilience
  • Design and implement database solutions, enhancements, and data architectures supporting OptumCare applications including Curo, Order Utility, and Optum Pro
  • Optimize and tune database performance through data model design, query tuning, indexing, and capacity planning
  • Perform Snowflake database administration, access controls, and security configuration
  • Eliminate team churn and operational waste by designing and implementing automation for routine database administration and menial tasks
  • Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate tasks, and drive continuous improvement
  • Evaluate emerging trends and technologies to inform solution design, architectural updates, and strategic innovation
  • Enforce security standards, access controls, data encryption, and robust backup/disaster recovery strategies
  • Create and maintain technical documentation related to database architecture, design, and operational procedures
  • Work independently across multiple Scrum teams to collaborate on application architecture, decision-making, and cohesive solution delivery
  • Solve unique and complex database problems with broad business impact, effectively communicating and translating complex concepts for technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Present and demonstrate database solutions and project outcomes to technical peers, partner teams, and senior leadership
  • Mentor junior members of the engineering team to foster technical excellence and achieve key business objectives

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in Postgres database administration, architecture, and configuration
  • 5+ years of experience using SQL for querying, data manipulation, and database management
  • 5+ years of experience optimizing database performance through indexing, query tuning, and database optimization techniques
  • 3+ years of experience in MySQL database administration
  • 3+ years of experience with Postgres Flexible Server on Microsoft Azure
  • 3+ years of experience in systems analysis
  • 3+ years of experience presenting and demonstrating technical solutions to peers and senior management
  • 2+ years of experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment
  • 2+ years of experience in Snowflake administration and security

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience working in a Healthcare environment or Medical Management domain
  • 3+ years of Care Management and Utilization Management domain experience
  • 2+ years of experience working in a cloud-based enterprise environment
  • Hands-on experience with Linux operating systems
  • Experience working effectively within a distributed or virtual team environment
  • Experience with technical tools and technologies such as GitHub, Python, Java, Postgres, and Azure

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $91,700 to $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
